Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / HELP ADVISE PLEASE- milk drying up

Hi this weekend my gorgeous bitch had 3 beautiful puppies.
However the last two were very large and had to be delivered by emergancy c-section. And were still born.
We were left with a beautiful little girl and thankfully mummy is doing well after her upsetting ordeal.
She has taken over looking after her pup and is settled.

My question is; after her c-section and with her only having one pup stimulating her lactation will she dry up?
I have tested her nipples and only two are actually producing.
I am very concerned for their welfare.

They have an appointment at the vets monday afternoon. I just thought with a forum there will be many experienced people
and a few answers are better than one.

So if any one has any advice or answers myself, saffron (mummy) and little moo-min (pup) will be very VERY grateful.

Thank you

Shouldn't do as milk is produced in response to demand but it can be a bit slow to get going following a section.  As long as the puppy does not seem dehydrated and looks to be thriving I would not interfer.

make sure she has loads to drink, four smaller meals a day, rice pudding, scrambled eggs, meat, fish. this will help her milk supply.
Make sure you take the sharp ends of the puppies nails, and hold her on the more she sucks the more the milk will come. An extra blood lose during c/section does sometimes reduce the milk supply. It should come through with a good rich diet.

Agree with denese, as long as her diet is good, milk will come through.  After a section, it does sometimes take a while longer for things to settle.  Just keep putting the little girl on to the back teats, and encourage the suckling to ensure further milk production.

As to only 2 teats producing, I think this is normal in small litters.  One of my breeds has 1-3 pups and I often find that milk isn't produced further up the teats.  Remember that more milk will be produced as pup demands more, and it's early days yet.  Make sure your bitch is drinking plenty, she sounds to be doing fine looking after her little girl, I think your vet will be happy enough with her.  Try not to worry too much, you don't want to pass on your anxiety to your new mum.

Good luck :-)

Also depends on the breed.  our Pom's I can never get milk out after they've had the pups but the pups always survive so it's definitely there.  Even with my Spanish sometimes I'm not able to get milk through but again pups have always thrived.
