Topic Dog Boards / General / GSD confusion
- By molezak [gb] Date 15.05.09 13:24 UTC
Hi having read and observed from afar the ongoing debate within GSD/Alsation circles, and being the owner of what is our 4th GSD (a sort-of rescue case), I am very interested but confused at where the breed is heading... Do enthusiasts see the KC splitting the two types and would they support that?  I absolutely love the breed and ours have always just been pets alongside our show/working dogs.  The idea of showing and working one has always appealed but all the confusion (that I have) and the split puts me off.

My husband was asking me which is the original type and which is the healthiest but I couldn't give him all the facts so thought I'd ask on here!  Hope you don't mind!

I doubt the KC would allow them to split.  They will be wanting the breed to be moving in a healthy direction above all, I would imagine, and spliting could lead to extremes for at least one variety.

I know it isn't quite the same thing, but so many breeds (at least in gundogs, working and pastoral breeds) exist in two versions anyway -a working type and a show type. None of them will be split into two breeds, and prospective owners will just have to decide which type they prefer, especially as far as temperament and activity levels go, and what they want to do with their dog -show or work.
