My neck is sore today as i got bitten by a spider whilst in bed, i kept feeling tickly, then must have rubbed it as i  found a pretty chunky dead spider under me this morning and my neck is really sore, i phoned nurse at the doctors and she was really suprised but said keep an eye on it and come down if it gets worse, im on anti-histamins for allergies all year and yesterday i started anti biotics from dentist yesterday so hopefully that will sort it out, it hurts like hell and feels very like a wasp sting. xx

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek.......................poor you!  I doubt if I'll sleep a wink now!!

Hope you feel better soon

- By Whistler [gb] Date 13.05.09 16:21 UTC
I did that with a moth when I was about 6 I still cant sleep with one in my room. As a kid I sat on the stairs until my Dad caught it for me before I could sleep.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 13.05.09 16:23 UTC
On this does anyone have a going to bed routine? I lift my quilt up to check for spiders and remove all the pillows as well. Pathetic but I can't relax until I do.
- By susieq [gb] Date 13.05.09 16:51 UTC
yes, everytime! and there's no way I can sleep when I know there's a spider in the room!  We have some absolute monsters here..........even my Leo is scared of them!!
- By suejaw Date 13.05.09 16:54 UTC
This is when a vacuum comes in handy!!!! Suck the suckers up!!
- By susieq [gb] Date 13.05.09 16:58 UTC
Ooooooh no, that would really freak me out.................live spiders running round the vac..............then when I go to bed they'll climb back out and get me!!
- By Gemini05 Date 13.05.09 17:09 UTC
oooo this is making me feel on edge! Lucky i too use me hoover to get rid of the horrid monsters but my hoover bags have a plastic stopper on them so when its not turned on the shutter shuts! So no risk of returning monsters! :)
- By Sullysmum Date 13.05.09 17:10 UTC
Whenever we see spiders they either go up the vaccuum or in the garden, could have been hiding anywhere, we always strip the bed right back before making it and hoover the bungalow regularly, but we had a tall rose bush outside the bathroom (bungalow) window that has been blowing and banging on the open window last few weeks, leaves kept coming in, so i cut it down today bet thats where it came in!!!!!
- By freelancerukuk [de] Date 13.05.09 17:54 UTC
Oh no! I get very large bath spiders hanging around in my bedroom at this time of year and they do look as though they could give one a bite. I hope your neck clears up. Did you manage to keep the body of the spider that bit you? It could be useful to know what type it is.

Hope you feel better soon.

Ugh,how horrible. It's brought back memories of something i was trying to forget, though it only happened a couple of weeks ago!Last thing at night i brought my washing in from the line, one item being a longsleeved top i wear for bed.So as i was folding stuff up i thought i might as well wear it and took it upstairs with me.I did all the usual-teeth brushing and all that, put my radio on and got undressed.Put jama bottoms on and put left arm in top.a soft buzzing sound came from somewhere.I thought it was static on the radio, til i suddenly became aware of a tickly feeling on my hand.A giant bee(may be a slight exaggeration)clinging on,i jumped and jerked my arm up to get it off me.Of course the next thing i felt was a sting.the bee was crawling about the bed and i had to use my top to pick it up and put the whole lot out of the bedroom window.I thought the kids will think i'm so brave and couldn't wait to show them my wound, only to see not the slightest mark the next day.
- By dexter [gb] Date 13.05.09 18:45 UTC
Eeew how horrid, keep a eye on it :) we use a spider catcher as hubby and i are scared of the things, can't kill them though....flys on the other hand grrrr!! LOL:).
- By Sullysmum Date 13.05.09 18:48 UTC
Yes the nurse said to keep it just incase so its dead in a lidded pot.
- By annieg3 [gb] Date 13.05.09 18:50 UTC
Ok, some help for you all, I hope. I am totally freaked out by spiders and being on my own and a bit of a demmic find it hard to remove the little horrors from ceilings etc. I made a solution (must have looked around t tinternet, cant remember now!) Just get a one of those spray bottle thingies, mine is a medium size  7" tall and about 11" in diameter (It really doesnt matter) Mine has got about 2 1/2 " of water in it (very technical this eh!!) Get some oil of cloves (the stuff you put on when you have toothache.) Add several drops to the water until it smells nice and oil of clovery and bobs your uncle. Spray it around your room, around edges and ceiling corners and window edges etc. I even spray around the sides of my bed!!! Spiders hate it!!! I can honestly say that I only saw two spiders all last year in my whole house and they were just passing through, rather quickly. I used to dread August as that seems to be the worst time for spiders but not now. I believe there is another ingredient that makes it doubly effective but am researching that at the moment and you never know, I might go into a cottage business with a spider disappearerer!!!!
- By Paula [gb] Date 13.05.09 18:59 UTC
I'll be your first customer annieg3!!!  Just the thought of one being in my bedroom, let alone in my bed makes me feel sick :-(

Bleuuuuuuccccccchhhhhhh!  If I had a mirror in front of me, I'm sure I'd look green!!
- By annieg3 [gb] Date 13.05.09 19:02 UTC

> I'll be your first customer annieg3!!!

Right, you are the first on the list!!!! Just try the cloves thing though. You get used to the smell and its not that unpleasant really. Better than the b..... spiders!!

not any more but for a couple of years i did. this was following a day when i had been out on the tiles all night and staggered in the next morning, clambered into bed without paying any attention and found a HUGE spider right next to me. i absolutely cacked it and was freaked for ages afterwards.
- By Sullysmum Date 13.05.09 20:29 UTC
Mine wasnt in bed when went there, but was hiding somewhere waiting to 'get' me!
- By poppity [gb] Date 13.05.09 21:31 UTC

That was the size of the bee i told you about!

I'd have moved house!:)
- By Astarte Date 13.05.09 21:47 UTC
lol, it was a very old house and was rife with spiders!
- By suz1985 [gb] Date 13.05.09 22:34 UTC
betterware catalogue sell a stop spider spray, its brilliant! it has clove oil and orange (i think, not 100%) ive been using it for a year now, and it really works, spray it around windows and doors every few weeks. i als have some "clickers" in my house, they send out ultrasonic vibrations every few seconds, apprently spiders and other small creepy things hate them. highly recommended!
- By poppity [gb] Date 13.05.09 22:42 UTC

> creepy things hate them

I've got a plug in thing to deter mice and on the box it said it deters cockroaches as well as they have the same kind of nervous system.Isn't that a strange thought?
- By Goldiemad [gb] Date 14.05.09 00:01 UTC
Hmm, just what I needed as I am off to bed!!

I hate spiders since one day when I was sat relaxing on the loo thinking of pleasant thoughts, as you do when you have a minutes peace and quiet. Something caught my eye and as I glanced down I saw a huge, and I mean huge, spider sat on the inside of my shorts (which were wrapped around my knees). Without going into too much detail, I didnt wait to finish said deed, leapt up screaming and kicking trying to get shorts, etc to drop off from around my ankles. Hubbie thundered upstairs, accompanied by my GSD, both ready to tackle the mad assailant, only to find me standing in the bath (bottom half starkers) in floods of tears. We never did find the monster, but I know it was definitely in my shorts. Where it came from I don't know, but it was there.

and now i'm off to bed probably to have spider nightmares!!

> live spiders running round the vac

You'll be pleased to know Susie that the spiders die as going through the vac knocks their legs off!! Woohoo..

I like the idea of this spray, just going to hunt back through posts to see if i can find make or place to buy it, like idea very very much.. I live on a farm so really no escaping the critters, but all the same i HATE them.

When i was little my mother was on the phone and calmly told me not to move as there was a spider on my back.. Well, how do you expect an 8yr old to react to that, i screamed, jumped about and threw my dressing gown off. Saw the thing and it was GINORMOUS.. The person on the other end of the phone said they had to pull the phone away from their ear as i screamed so loud.

I worked on a farm in Oz and drove a tractor through the banana trees. There were loads of spiders in webs, i asked for an tool to kill them otherwise i would drive them into my face!yuck.. They thought i was a wuss, but they all had bites and cuts on their faces from the spiders.. Did i want that??? NOWAY!!!

Apparently, placing conkers around the home in every room helps keep spiders out!
- By susieq [gb] Date 14.05.09 07:52 UTC
Oh no, as much as I hate them I couldn't kill them.  I usually make OH walk to other end of paddock before releasing them (with me stood at the window shouting 'further'!!).

My auntie lives in Perth, her house is on stilts, and every spider season she goes out with an aerosol and a lighter and flame-throws them all!

Apparently, placing conkers around the home in every room helps keep spiders out! "Jo"

OOhhhh that's an interesting one, how does that work? Or more to the point why does that work? :-)

What a horrible shock Sullysmum, that would probably wreck my self counselling with reagards to spiders, I just tell myself they are good to have in the home as they eat all the nasty bugs and somehow it stopped me being afraid of them, I always catch them and throw them out, though sometimes I decide that some can stay to do their job and distract the other household members (who always call me to get rid of them) whilst they crawl away, but if I was bitten by one I'd probably have to tell myself it only bit because I was squashing it in self defence. I think you can tell yourself that one too as you did squash it! :-D

Hope that the bite heals with no problems, poor you.

Make it yourself!!! its done in a second and it last for ages. Much cheaper!!! (see earlier post for recipe) You can always add orange essence or oil and it will be just the same!

Ive also got a 6'5" son who makes his 5'2" gf get them out whilst he faffs about yelling I kid you not. When we went to Greece when Sam was about 18months if there was a cockroach there we sent him in with an empty lemonade bottle when it was dead, he would tell us we could come in.  Mum & I stood watching through a crack in the door with Ben who is the 6'5" son.
He was really brave with his nappy on beating hell out of any spider or roach, fearless.

I have no idea how or why it works lol, but an old lady I know, swears by them, it seems to work..the lady never has any spiders in her home!...........maybe they give out a hidden aroma that repels the spiders?
- By Paula [gb] Date 14.05.09 15:19 UTC
Aaaaaaaagh, Poppity don't mention the C-word, even the word makes me feel ill

> Just re read through, thanks i will, have clove oil somewhere as well..

There you are - sorted!!!
Going back to what a couple of people have said about bringing insects inside on washing etc. this happened to me years ago and wasnt as traumatic as the bee incident but I hate creepy crawlies. as I said, this happened years ago but i still shake every bit of washing I bring in to the house. Never again.
I once opened my knicker drawer and saw a spider scurrying about. Now my knickers smell of clove oil too!!!lol

Sorry, they are little horrors aren't they?

> Aaaaaaaagh, Poppity don't mention the C-word, even the word makes me feel ill

i'm going to be itching all night mentioning this but i've thought it now anyway...

for me its earwigs (shudder)

one day delightful tom boy angelic child me was digging in some mud. duringmy play i disturbed a nest of earwigs which all started running all over me. screeching and cacking it i legged it into the house and sobbingly told my mum the sorry tale. in a fantastic example of "Parenting- How not to do it!" my mother decided it would be a laugh to tell me that they were called earwigs because they climb in your ears and eat your brain. i didn't sleep for a week!! and developed a fondness for cleaning my ears lol.

(other examples of my mothers parenting include the time she told me a chilli was a mini pepper and i should bite it, i think i was 4. shes nice really)
- By ceejay Date 14.05.09 19:29 UTC
When I was about 12 another girl told me to open the nest box on the tree.  Well stupid me thought that there was going to be a nice little clutch of baby birds - instead it was full of earwigs which rained down on me.  Can't say I thought much of that girl afterwards.  Never liked spiders but you have to be brave when you have children and can't show them how much you dislike them.  Didn't work because my daughter is terrified of even the smallest one :-(
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 14.05.09 21:53 UTC
Not bothered by spiders which is good seeing as both Mum and elder sisters scream at the sight of one.
I once had to go and rescue my neighbour from the spider in his kitchen. He is built like a brick shed and as tough as old boots. Up until now I kept my promise not to tell!!!
I always put spiders outside, I never kill them . I reckon that is why I get so many huge cobbies in my house, or is that because I hate housework?
- By goldie [gb] Date 15.05.09 12:40 UTC
Im not bothered by spiders either, they dont worry me at all.
We had a huge one running around the lounge the other evening, the dogs thought it was great fun,but spider was quicker than them,he kept darting under the sofa for cover.
- By Paula [gb] Date 15.05.09 16:34 UTC
Why did I come back to this thread?????

Darting!!!  That's exactly why I hate crawly, scurrying things!!!!!!   Bleuch!!!!!

I'm off and I'm not coming back!!!!!!  (Only from this thread though!
- By poppity [gb] Date 15.05.09 18:09 UTC
Here's one for you,Paula. At an animal sanctuary in cumbria,a couple of years ago,I managed to have a tarantula put onto the palm of my hand.My biggest worry as it was lowered onto my hand was that i would jerk my hand up,like i did with the bee,and the spider would end up on the ceiling!I couldn't believe how light and soft it felt. So,so glad it didn't move though-Heaven knows where it would have ended up if it had.
- By suejaw Date 15.05.09 18:51 UTC
I went to a childrens zoo locally when i was younger i walked into a room, not paying much attention to what may be lurking inside it. Family followed.

I looked up and screamed and ran out petrified.
Lots and lots of big hairy spiders - behind a glass panel.. I have to laugh now as there is no way they could touch me but i hated the sight of them.
- By poppity [gb] Date 15.05.09 19:18 UTC
My partner John, and i took our children to Manchester museum when they were young and they had a phone line there that you picked up to hear a talk about bees.I was doing my usual of lead by example stuff(oh dear),and picked the phone up and put it to my ear.I got the fright of my life when a massive buzzing sound came whizzing down tthe line straight into my ear.
For a split second i thought i'd made a mistake and unleashed a swarm. The phone went flying up into the air and i screamed out loud, much to the amusement of john and the disgust of said teenagers.I don't think the staff and other visitors were too impressed either!
- By Paula [gb] Date 16.05.09 13:47 UTC
My sister's got a Tarantula called Beryl and that's what she says when she's trying to persuade my to hold it!!  I can't even look at the flippin' thing :-o

now look what you've made me do Poppity - come back and think about horrid spiders!!!
- By poppity [gb] Date 16.05.09 18:48 UTC
What made me determined to touch it ,is that i told John and our daughter Kate that i would, and i wasn't going to back out of it.It really wasn't anything like i feared.I was so proud of myself afterwards and Kate and john were as pleased as punch.
- By poppity [gb] Date 17.05.09 08:29 UTC
P.S,Beryl's a great name for her!:)
- By poppity [gb] Date 17.05.09 08:39 UTC
When i was young my brother bought me a book about the animal kingdom.I was thrilled to bits and couldn't wait to find a quiet spot in the house to go through it.Turning the pages and studying each picture with deep interest,i turned one page and was met by the horrifying site of a life size picture of a giant stag beatle-the largest in the world.I couldn't even touch the book for ages and when i could i'd turn over a few together when it came to that bit,so that it couldn't touch me.No kidding,it was about 10inches long. Horrible!!!!!!!
- By Ioxia [gb] Date 17.05.09 15:46 UTC Edited 17.05.09 15:49 UTC
I am sat here shaking, literally. When I was a kid I was sleeping over at my Cousin Christine's house, and she had asked me if I would fetch in the washing from the line but to shake it as they often got creepy crawlies on it. So I said i would and off I went with the wash basket and pegs. After removing a few items and shaking them I saw nothing come off them so thought, Sod it, and started just putting the clothes into the basket without shaking them. Later that evening as Christine was doing the ironing, she let out this "shriek" and calling her husband Brendan over. Well there was loads of earwigs crawling around the basket, Brendan being Brendan decided to tease me and used a wooden spring type peg to pick them up and wave them at me, whilst I climbed and scrambled up on the back of the chair as high as I could go, screaming as I did so. He then turned and threw then on the fire where they crackled, and burned, as he turned around to get another peg full, I flew across the sofa into the kitchen and bolted the door (don't lknow why there was a bolt on it, but at that moment I was so relieved there was) where I broke down in tears and refused to come out.

I hate anything with more than four legs, the only things I can abide is ladybirds and butterflies.
- By Paula [gb] Date 17.05.09 16:17 UTC
I'm totally with you on that one Ioxia, ladybirds and butterflies are fine, anything else with lots of legs is just horrible!
- By poppity [gb] Date 17.05.09 16:42 UTC

> He then turned and threw then on the fire where they crackled

Brendan only has 2 legs and i think i'd run in the opposite direction from him!
