Topic Dog Boards / Health / dogs in seasons for dummies!

Hiya!
Well as some of you may know, Tess is having her first season. We are now on the 17th day and for the last 4-5 days, my entire male has been going mad. He was so fine until then and suddenly, he started whimpering, panting and shaking and just acting like he was possessed... Oh dear! was too good to be true...
I was told seasons lasted around 3 weeks (sorry only ever had boys before), and we're nearing the end now and yet my dog seems EXTREMELY keen still. I'm at my wits ends and will definitely not repeat the experience of having them both under the same roof!!! It was just a matter of timing for this first time, unfortunately.
When can I hope my boy to return to normal??? Do you fully clean the house when your girl's not in season anymore, are there any tips to get rid of the smell that drives males mad? I'm just thinking he might still be going beserk when she's not actually "ready" anymore because the scent is lingering everywhere she's been? I know it's not just a smell, it's a pheromone thing, but still, any advice would be useful!! Sorry if I'm being dumb!

My girl was in for 6 weeks on her first season, drove me around the bend more than my boy, Anton was actually totally interested in her at week 5!  They of course were in a seperate room, but I had to swap them around to let them out as I only have a living room and kitchen downstairs.

he should lose interest in her once she has finished her season, my boy loses interest in my girls once past 22 days, i always like to clean during and after season, garden as well, you can buy a spray to spray on your girl to cover the smell of season but i have never used it, now i send my boy to friends house when there is a season in the house to avoid accidents and to stop my boy getting so worked up

I would not consider your girl safe from his or other male advances until four weeks after the season started, assuming her vulva has returned to normal and all discharge has ceased and things look closed down and unreceptive.

I would give her a bath after the three weeks.  Hose down her toileting areas and he will soon return to normal, especially once she threatens to rip his head off a few times ;)
