Topic Dog Boards / General / What do you have on your tags?
- By Silver [gb] Date 06.05.09 13:16 UTC
Just going to order some new identity tags and whilst trying to work out how much information I want to put on it got me curious...what do you have on your dog's discs?

I know (my) name and address inc postcode is mandatory, but beyond that?

I'm definitely going to put name, address (well, postcode & house number) and phone number on but I'm wondering whether to include both home and mobile numbers, microchipped (do have those "I Am Microchipped" tags already so it would replace them) or if there's anything else useful to have on them....I won't put the dogs names on.

Oh and they're small dogs so the tags are little!

All that aside I'm just nosey to know now the thought has entered my head :-D Not only what information you have on them but how you've laid it out too.

> name and address inc postcode

I include phone number and on the reverse I do have - I AM MICROCHIPPED.

My tags are small ones from Identitag and are on the collars of my Cavaliers.

Hi

Like tooolz I have phone numbers (land line and mobile) and on the reverse - I AM MICROCHIPPED.

Because one of my boys stays with grandma when we go to shows I have a special holiday tag for him to wear with all her details on.  I put it on with his usual one so just in case they can't get hold of her (out looking for the dog), they could still ring us.
- By ClaireyS Date 06.05.09 14:17 UTC
I have indigo collar tags which fit loads of info on them, I have dogs name, my surname, "chipped tatooed & DNA profiled", first line of my address and postcode, home no. and mobile no.
- By craigles Date 06.05.09 14:18 UTC
I have my mobile number that is switched on even at work albeit on silent with a voicemail facility and do check it regularly.
- By Tarn [gb] Date 06.05.09 14:19 UTC
We have surname, house number, postcode and mobile numbers, separate microchip tags at the moment but plan on getting new tags with that on reverse.

I never put dogs' names or home phone no. as if they were lost we would probably be out looking for them, not at home waiting for someone to ring to say they'd found them.

Our dogs always come on holiday with us, so no need to change tags, we have our mobiles with us :-)
- By dexter [gb] Date 06.05.09 15:24 UTC
We have Name, hubby's and my mobile numbers and microchipped on our lot :)
- By Tigger2 Date 06.05.09 15:30 UTC
I have double sided tags, on one side they have

house number & street
postcode
mobile number
landline number

on the reverse they have...

Dog is microchipped and neutered
Reward for return
Vets bills paid
Vets - their phone number
- By magica [gb] Date 06.05.09 19:57 UTC
I have my new boy Starsks with address & home telephone number on his tag but a really scary thing happened last week staying at my sisters in Wiltshire- her OH took them all out for a ramble with a neighbour so they had 6 dogs in total- Starsk got worried as lost sight of his sister Tinker or just missing his mummy? and decided to run away from OH calling him back and walked back to my sisters house! Which is across 2 busy main roads thank the lord it was 8am Sunday morning!

I only realised after that happening that if he had been knocked down by a car- no one would of gotten near him to of picked him up I'm sure! but there's no way they could of gotten in contact with me if anything had happened- so micro chipping and mobile number on the tags for him!
- By Harley Date 06.05.09 20:46 UTC
I have our house number and postcode, home phone number, mobile phone number on one side of the name tag and the other has "Scan Me" as it is takes up less space :-)
- By tooolz Date 06.05.09 21:20 UTC

> the other has "Scan Me" as it is takes up less space

Yes for a little dog this is ideal - Must be a big a tag to have

"Dog is microchipped and neutered
Reward for return
Vets bills paid
Vets - their phone number"
   on the reverse :-)
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 06.05.09 21:25 UTC
They both have another tag it is like a mini scanner that says "Please scan me" on it.
- By Ridgie [gb] Date 07.05.09 09:55 UTC
Both of mine have Indigotags and have on them:

My surname
first line of address
Postcode
Home and mobile number (like many I have my mobile on all the time and it's always with me)
Microchipped
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 07.05.09 10:02 UTC
I have

My Name: Miss * *********
House Number & Street Name
Postcode
Mobile Number
Home Number

Apparently our dog warden is very strict with tags and in out Local Authority all info i have on my dogs tag is compulsary
- By tohme Date 07.05.09 18:17 UTC
Mine are legally compliant so have number of house, postcode and my name plus mobile, house and vet tel number.

No need to advise they are chipped as they are tattood!
- By Masonsmum [gb] Date 07.05.09 18:42 UTC
I was once told that if you put the dogs name on the tag, and he gets stolen then they will know what to call him! This stuck with me so I put (His Name is Mason)
Mr.Mason
The Pub Name
Post Code
Mobile Number
Landline
and on the reverse
I am Chipped
:)
with the smile!
- By TrishlovesMiley [gb] Date 07.05.09 20:04 UTC
house number, post code and mobile on one side, Micro-chipped on the other :)

>I was once told that if you put the dogs name on the tag, and he gets stolen then they will know what to call him!

I've heard this too, and can't understand the point. After all, if they've got hold of your dog and are reading the name on the tag, they've still got hold of your dog, so knowing his name will make no difference.

If they don't know his name, they'll just change it - thousands of rescue dogs have their names changed without problem. Even when puppies are homed the new owner will give them a name that the breeder didn't call them by. Knowing the name means nothing.

I have chipped, tatooed and DNA profiled on my tags as a theft deterrant....
- By dancer Date 09.05.09 11:16 UTC
I've always had my surname, house number, post code, home phone and two mobile numbers. Two of my dogs have passed up to Gold good cits with this info. However, my third dog passed bronze at LKA in December with this on her tag and Silver in March (all with no problrms), but I then found another club doing Gold testing and they told me she would not pass with that information as it had to contain the full address. I had a long debate with the trainers about this and in the end relented and bought a cheap plastic tag for the test, on which I put her full address.

I am now confused, I always thought my tags were legal and contained the relevant info.
- By cutewolf [gb] Date 09.05.09 11:26 UTC
On mine I have...

Front:
My Surname
Address & Postcode

Back:
Home phone number

mine have my surname, address, home tel, both mine and hubby's phone number along with the vets number, and "i am chipped".
- By Whistler [gb] Date 11.05.09 14:55 UTC

House number/name and postcode is sufficient - anybody with internet access can find your address from that, so I'm sure the police or dog warden can! I've just ordered new tags, and was amazed that people selling them don't know the legal requirements - on ebay one seller said 'we recommend your dog's name and telephone number' neither of which are legal requirements, but omitting owner's name and address, which are!

The KC website states:
The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but advisable).

The new tags I've just ordered have:

surname
house no. postcode
OH's mobile no.
my mobile no.
microchipped (there'd be no need to scan chip if tag is still with dog as my details are there, but I put it as a theft deterrent ;-))
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.05.09 09:12 UTC

>anybody with internet access can find your address from that, so I'm sure the police or dog warden can!

Don't forget that, as a rule, people don't have internet access out in the woods when they've just found your lost dog! They're need the information to be able to return it to you straight away.

The police have no interest in lost dogs - it's not part of their duty any more - and dog wardens are only available during office hours (unless they're on another case out of mobile contact - not all areas have coverage). So unless there's enough information for a random person to know where to take your dog you're reducing your chances of getting it back safely.
- By clio1 [gb] Date 12.05.09 09:49 UTC
I've just got some lovely collars and leads with my name and mobile number embroidered on them.  They look really smart, and if (and when!) the dogs loose their engraved tags, they still have some identification on them.

Which is why I put mobile numbers on :-) If I had just lost one of my dogs I would also be out in the woods looking for him so it would be more sensible for the finder to ring and tell me they'd found him and arrange to meet rather than drive him to my house only to find nobody home! If the dog did get handed in somewhere, the address would still be easily found, or the finder could take it home and look it up.

There's not much room on tags - I'd far rather have instantly accessible phone numbers than expect people to drive miles to my house to bring a lost dog home (not that I plan on losing any of them ;-)!) And I put both our numbers on in case one of us should have a flat battery etc.

I once arrived at the woods to find a man in the car park who had lost a dog - he asked me to look out for it, but when I got back to the car after 45 mins, he was still sitting there to see if it came back to the car - if anyone had found it in the woods, the owner could have been phoned and met up with them within minutes - if he'd put an address but no phone number, a finder would have had to take it to the home address, but the owner was still in the car park!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.05.09 07:26 UTC

>Which is why I put mobile numbers on

That's fine - as long as it's in addition to your home address. :-)

>There's not much room on tags

On the ones I use (by PetTag) the small brass ones (one inch in diameter) there's room for 6 lines on each side, so plenty of space for name and full address on one side and phone numbers - landline and mobile - on the other. Even more space on the larger tags. Plus, of course, there's no law limiting you to only one tag. ;-)

>a finder would have had to take it to the home address, but the owner was still in the car park!

Surely as they went past the owner in the car park he'd have claimed his dog?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.05.09 09:06 UTC
Mine have my affix instead of my surname, as it is easier, and of course full address and tel number.  Other side says they are chipped and tattooed to contact Pet-log and NDTR, again mainly as theft deterrent.

I want a finder to easily be able to bring my dog home should it stray not having to contact anyone else to do so.

If you don't have an address then getting the dog off your hands can be such a problem that many would just not bother picking the dog up.  I have to admit that I have turned a blind eye on occasion hoping the dog would find it's own way home, as on an evening with no transport getting a dog to the local authority is nigh on impossible.
- By lots of spots [gb] Date 13.05.09 10:51 UTC
God do I need all that on tags?

Have just done puppy foundation, and was told just needed phone numbers, so have bought tags with that on.
Also, both pet stores I went into, the tags only had room for dogs name and phone numbers.

Panic panic panic.

Can anyone reccommend websites or links where I can buy inexpensive suitable tags please?
- By dogs a babe Date 13.05.09 11:59 UTC
I'm sure someone further back confirmed what is legally required but you can also look at the KC website to double check what is necessary.  If you are working toward KC Good Citizens awards your trainer should also be giving handouts with this info.

I bought mine from Identitag , there is plenty of room to add all the info required AND some of the nice to have information too.  They have examples on their site.  They may not necessarily be the cheapest but they are great quality and 2 years later still look great.

Silly me, forgot to mention - there's a car park at each end ;-)
- By ClaireyS Date 13.05.09 19:52 UTC
have a look online, even my cats tags fit 2 telephone numbers and address on.
- By ClaireyS Date 13.05.09 19:55 UTC
I found a golden retriever once - collar no tag - I put it on a lead and walked it with my two back towards my house, it trotted along lovely with my boys, straight past its own house without even looking and then its owner drove straight past us  she did turn round and come back when she realised that the golden looked out of place with my boys (I walk past their farm every day !!)
- By magica [gb] Date 13.05.09 21:35 UTC

- By kiera09 [gb] Date 14.05.09 17:54 UTC
LOL! My local dogs home has always chipped dogs for free, and they spay them free to!It makes sense, they proberly save money in the long run!
- By tohme Date 14.05.09 18:05 UTC
THe KC site has examples of legally compliant ID tags, you can choose to put your full address or just house number/name and postcode plus your name of course.

Lots of GC candidates have been excluded from the test post the first part of the test (examination of collar and tag) because they do not have legally compliant tags.
- By RuthF [gb] Date 14.05.09 18:47 UTC
My dog always has two tags. The first has our full address including postcode on one side, and my surname, mobile and home phone numbers on the other side. The second tag is a smaller one, on one side it says 'ear tattooed' and has the number for the tattoo register. the second side says 'I am microchipped please scan me'. I couldn't fit all I wanted onto one tag so decided to go for two - at least if one is lost there's a chance that the other might remain.
- By Isabel Date 15.05.09 07:08 UTC

> My local dogs home has always chipped dogs for free, and they spay them free to!

But that would be a charity surely not intended for people who can afford to pay ie those that can afford to breed their dogs.
- By kiera09 [gb] Date 15.05.09 07:20 UTC
Im not sure, I dont think they asked for a donation or even mentioned it? They're a dog pound so chipping dogs saves them money if they can find the owner, and spaying reduces the number of unwanted litters, I have seen mothers with pups in there-its so sad :-(
- By Isabel Date 15.05.09 07:23 UTC
If they are not a charity then they are using public money.
- By kiera09 [gb] Date 15.05.09 07:54 UTC
I didnt realise that, I feel bad! Next time we go past I'll make a donation! x
- By liljakers [us] Date 16.05.09 03:45 UTC
