Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Help! Puppy with diarrhoea

Hello

My puppy is 10 wks old and due for 2nd jabs tomorrow.

All was going well until yesterday, when he did a poo that was jelly-like in consistency, yellow-ish in colour and like i said, covered in mucous.

I fed him as normal (3 times a day, haven't changed food since getting him at 8 weeks) then he didn't go all day until the evening...then his poo was fine, not runny or jellyish.

Then this morning he woke me up crying at 5am so i took him out and he did a normal poo (slightly karkhi in colour) which then led on to diarrhoea at the end, which was a darker shade of brown.  He then ran inside the house and did another blob which was yellowy-brown, not watery but very loose (clearly diarrhoea).  No blood in it.

He then ate breakfast (really not sure if i should feed him or not?!) and no poo since then.

I am feeling terrible as have been letting him out in the garden to housebreak, and i know i shouldn't really do this as he's not fully vaccinated.  I always stay with him but of course he's got a thing for chewing the plants (mainly bluebells) which i take off him but am wondering if he's eaten something dodgey.  Also stopped him licking water off the ground from the outside tap.

He seems fine in himself, is drinking and eating okay, and has his usual bouts of running around like a loony!

Should i take him to the Vet today?  Or see how he goes?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Of course he should be going in the garden unless it is a communal one with unvaccianted dogs visiting it.

I expect his breeder would have had the pups in their own garden from around 4 weeks old.

Minor digestive upsets are to be expected, and as long as it isn't bad and he is eating and more importantly drinking well he should be fine.

Sounds like he ate something in the garden and as he only had one loose ending poo and none since I would just keep an eye on him.

Have you wormed him in the last days?  When was he last done?

Thanks Brainless, though i have an update for you.  After his first bout of diarrhoea yesterday i remembered i hadn't given him the worm tablet from the Vet, so gave him it.  After i posted this morning he had a poo which was half normal/half covered in thick mucous, with a worm in it.  Really quite disgusting.
So, do you think it was the worm that was upsetting him?  Is it normal for this to happen?  Do i need to take any other action or just keep an eye on him like you said before.
Many thanks

I personally wouldn't do his 2nd vaccination unless he is 100% healthy. There shouldn't be any problems letting him out into the garden in the meantime. You could try adding some probiotic to his food (I always use Protexin Pro-Soluble or Bio Premium). If the diarrhoea persists, I would take a sample and ask your vet to send it away for analysis.

Natural yogurt is good for upset tummies, and i agree most vets wouldn't like to jab if he has an upset tummy so maybe worth just phoning your vet

What has he been wormed with?  When was he wormed before since he was born, and with what product.

If using the modern worming products I would not expect to see any worms as the larval stages would be dissolved and if he was wormed properly since birth there really should not be any mature worms to see.

Worms certainly are one reason for looseness.

Hmm, have to say i was surprised myself to see a bigish, obviously mature worm in his poo...and not even the little thread-like ones. Mind you, am not an expert on these parasites, it may have been some other white object!  Didn't hang around with it for too long!  The breeder wormed him regularly (every 2 weeks) with drontal puppy.  I don't know what product the Vet gave me.

Today he ate well and had 3 normal poos, so happy with that, although he doesn't seem to be drinking very much.  Also when i got back from School drop off he didn't cry to be let out of his cage and when i opened it he didn't rush out like usual, in fact just stayed there looking at me.

The Vet said to postpone his 2nd jabs til Saturday and i've booked to take him in today to get him checked out, temp etc as he doesn't seem quite right.

Some garden plants are poisonous. Others which are not poisonous can cause problems if enough of it is eaten. I had a fever few plant growing by my shed years ago when I first came here. One of my dogs dug up the plant and ate most of it, the result was a poorly dog with symptoms similar to those you describe.

Hi Polly

I will keep an eye on his plant-eating, though he seems bothered only with bluebells at the moment and i'm always outside with him so doesn't have a chance to ingest much of them.

Actually he's as right as rain today, bouncing around and with all normal poo etc.  Thank God for that and thanks everybody for your advice.
