Topic Dog Boards / General / poodle buyers beware.im so upset
- By Romside [gb] Date 03.05.09 22:31 UTC
as some of you know i am looking at a toy poodle to our family.i called a lady on saturday and we had a lovely chat on the phone she asked me all the right questions and i was happy to answer them and so made an appointment to visit,on the phone she told me pups were only 1 week old but i could see parents.
heres what i was told:
both parents were available to view
mum was cream dad was apricot
grandaraents were viewable too along with a sister to mum.
pra tested parents
pups will be kc reg.

i arrived and mother was in a pen with a lid on top stopping her from getting out of the pen,no water or food in this pen,the pen was big enough for the box to fit in and then enough room for her to stand in.thats it.then on top of that was two other bitches in pens with pups, outside were standard  poodles with puppies(which she asked me ARE YOU SURE YOU WONT HAVE A STANDARD)
i was told kc registering the pup would cost me more!
i was shocked because these puppies were not advertised as cheap at all,in fact they were a little over priced.
i walked into the room where the puppies and mothers were nursing.!!!!!
i thought i would walk into a room where i would meet dad and grandapraents and the sister NOT THE MOTHER AND MOST CERTANINLY NOT THE PUPPIES.i was even told if i rubbed this hand sterile cream into my hands i could hold a pup.
the woman smelled of booze and the whole place discusted me to be perfectly honest.
dad wasnt to be viewed she didnt have him none of the dogs were health tested and mum was black not cream.
everything she told me on the phone was lies.
i have thought long and hard about posting on here to warn others about what kind of people are out there,
what i have seen has upset me terribly.i just do not know how people can be allowed to do this.
i asked do the dogs roam freely at all and she said yes but not while she has puppies as they would fight over each others babies.
i have no idea how many dogs were in this house but what i do know is with a bit of brain ticking over its come to light that my mother in laws dog who is now blind at only 6 years old came from the same parents as the bitch in one of the cages.when i told her this she replied
thank you for bringing this to my attention!!!
not a tear in sight,no worry at all no nothing.if that were me id be asking questions left right and centre but we got nothing.
she did say oh well we better get them all tested then but you can bet your life she wont.
im just so upset at the sight of what ive seen the poor puppies on newspaper with the back door wide open.how can they possibly be kept warm?
the mothers the puppies im distressed.
can anything be done?
ILL BET NOT.
the most worrying thing is someone WILL buy these puppies(and i pray to god above im wrong)and theyre fate has been determined before they were born.these people will breed again and cause pups life to be unhealthy and distressed and owners heartache.please someone what is the world coming to.
i apologise if im not allowed to post any of this but i just thought that anyone looking for poodles should be aware.
dont buy these puppies perhaps it may cause them to re think next seasons breeding plans????

Tamara - well done for walking away without buying a puppy!   Every person who buys a puppy from a back-yard breeder like this leaves profit enough for the breeder to continue!

You can notify the local authority where this woman is - it may well be that she is not licenced to breed like this - or she may be exceeding her breeding quota if she is licensed.   That way at least, something positive could come out of the sitution.

As Loki's mum says, Local aauthority and if she's charging alot I wonder if it's declared on her taxes?  Inland revenue would love to know so might be worth calling them too?

It's a shame really.  Nothing can be done for the sake of the dogs, but it can if she's not paying tax!

how totally awful poor pups its sad ,
have you looked on this site to find a good breeder?
their are alot of backstreet breeders around and sadly these types of people are just in it for the  money they can make , the fact that you had concerns about the dogs is good on your part some other buyers may not be that knowing or may just take pity on the pups and buy one linning the pockets of these people,
i got my girl from a repitable breeder 4 years ago now and i feel safe knowing that i can call her anytime if i had any concerns about my dog , all the health checks were done i was given SO much info and advice i was blown away,
i didnt pay exrta for kc reg and i dont know anyone that has, all i payed was the standard fee to change the papers into my name but that was to the kc not the breeder,
im sure someone will come on and give you some good advice im not an expert but their are lots of good kind people on here that are and they only want whats best for the dogs,

their is a shop up the road from me that sells so called pedigree pups all differant breeds some x breeds to i went in out of curiosity and see this collie x looking thing and not very well at all i took pity on him when i asked what breed he was i was told he was collie x alsation , i then said oh he's not a pedigree then , the man said yes he was as both parents were pure collie and pure alsation ! i was a little confussed he must have thought i was totaly stupid as i asked do they come with papers he answered yes!
when i then said "oh so he's kc reg then" the man then started getting realy shirty with me and asked me to leave, i called my local council and the rspca as the pup did look ill and their was  Diareehor in his pen,
sadly the place is still open and still selling pups they not cheep either they wanted £800, for an old english sheep dog with no kc reg just a crap bit of paper with family history on it ,
i cant understand how this place stays in bussiness or why anyone would buy a puppy from them when you can go to a proper breeder you just need to find a good decent breeder who knows and loves their breed, good luck im sure someone here will give you some good advice,

It is unlikely that this person is a breed club member, but either way ti is a good idea to let the breed clubs know of this breeders activities as a heads up, and if they are members they may wish to do something about it.

I agree with all thats said - and breeders also like to know so that we can tell new owners to beware.
Its so sad for these puppies - its not there fault - but its better to walk away
I have pm you tamara

Hi Just wondering about the tax thing I was speaking to someone who breeds very expensive dogs and was told that he doesnt have to pay it as it is a hobby.  Is this wrong then?
- By ice_queen Date 04.05.09 18:06 UTC
If she is breeding excessivly, it doesn't matter if it is a hobby or not.

I know it happen both ways for people, some IR are tipped off and owe money, others (who do it properly) have ended up being refunded.  As you can guess they were grateful for the person who tipped IR off about them ;)
- By furriefriends Date 04.05.09 18:21 UTC
Yes as ice_queen says you have to pax tax regardless of how your money is earned and for whatever reason. You have a certain amount of money per year that you can earn without paying tax anything over that is liable for tax. whatever the source.T I think the amount is currently  round about £6000 per year. Wish it wasnt perhaps I could claim my job is just a hobby lol
Def a call to the revenue it may make some differenc to what she is doing as well as the local authority

Tamara ,
Where did you get this ladies number from ?  You were directed towards the Breed Club who should only put you in touch with good breeders . If you have got this ladies number from the Breed Club you should be reporting what you have seen to them , along with the other people mentioned .
If you got her number from an on-line dodgy web-site or your local paper then this is what can happen . ( yes i know that some good breeders post on those sites ).
I would advise you to walk away from these pups and put it down to experience .
Go and see a couple of litters then hopefully you will come across a breeder who you feel happy with .
Good luck .

i have spoen to lots of different people who have all given me numbers of good breeders.i got her number from a well known site most people visit it.the way the advert is posted its sounds lovely,it also doent put you off with how much they are asking, also the fact that she asked me a tonne of questions on the phone,i actually thought i was half way to getting the right puppy!!
how wrong can you be!!
i have been put on a few waiting lists but to be honest i (and i know this might be wrong but)i was more interested in talking to her about her opinions on PRA and her dogs ect.i want a white puppy and she had cream.but the sound of the advert and the way she spoke made me think what difference does it make if she is cream or white!
i have taken action dont worry about that, ive spoken to a few people who have guided me right and although i will not know the outcome i feel ive done my best.
its all anyone can do i suppose.
can i post where i got the number from???

Tamara
so sorry you had such a bad experience, glad you didn't take a pup out of pity. There are really good caring breeders out there though. Hope you find what you are looking for soon.

> Just wondering about the tax thing I was speaking to someone who breeds very expensive dogs and was told that he doesnt have to pay it as it is a hobby.  Is this wrong then?

Yes it is wrong. When I went to the local tax office two years ago I got talking to the tax inspectors there and they actually asked me if I'd be prepared to help them look into some breeders incomes, as they felt these people were over breeding and so they should be paying tax.
