Topic Dog Boards / General / Dog wee in house - smell removal!
- By littlemisshappy [gb] Date 28.04.09 10:02 UTC
My dog weed on the carpet in my small porch a few weeks ago which I cleaned up with a dog odour removal spray, followed by disinfectant the following day as the smell was still slightly there.  The problem is that now that the weather is getting warmer and there are glass panels in the porch the smell is getting worse.  When I say porch it is a small entrance area not big enough to swing a cat and unless I leave the door open there is no ventilation.  Does anyone have any other ideas/tips on how to get rid of the smell.

Throw the carpet out...lol

It could be the urine soaked through to the underlay as well as into the fibres of the carpet.  That being the case and the area being so small TBH I'd replace it rather than try to resolve the problem as since this happened some time ago it's probably too late.

The best way to remove for future ref is to VERY thoroughly blot up any residue with kitchen paper, then mop or wipe over with a solution of water and biological washing powder, blot again (repeat as necessary) and finish with a wipe over by a cloth dampened with white vinegar or spirit which will break down any remaining fatty acids.

regards, Teri

I'd also put a bit of vinyl in such a small heavily used area :-)  Then it's easy to wipe up messes or mucky footprints.

I finally bought a carpet shamooer at the weekend - it's great.  But it does sound like the wee has gone down to the underlay.

soda water, works a treat, I was advised by a friend who has had many dogs over the years shortly after buying our puppy lab it works by neutralsing the odour, also without the traces of scent there your dog shouldnt keep going back.

I agree on the soda water. My dogs breeder suggested it to me - I only wish I had known that when my previous dog became a little incontionent :)

White vinegar diluted in water will get the smell out.   However, if the urine has seeped into the underlay you need to make sure that whatever you use also reaches the underlay.   In other words, really soak the spot - don't just spray or dab at it.

However, in a very small area - I'd give it one more try and if that didn't work I'd be pulling up the carpet too :-)

I have tryed the pet odor cleaner for my steam cleaner and it doesnt work.i bought this new febreeze that is a liquid spray for pet odor and it works good.but if your carpet is bad I'd throw it away.my jack russell had a few accidents before I had him fixed so i know what you are going through .my house would smell worse on rainy days and I vacum everyday. But i bought the new febreeze and it works greaat.
