Hi, this is a request from my sister who has 4 rescue greyhounds.  They have all come to her in poor condition, mostly from Ireland and with little history. She has had them now for a few years and have all settled nicely.  They are all spayed bitches and in good health but.. some of them have bald/no hair on backs of their legs and tail.  They all have a life of luxury now with deep soft beds and stress free lives (lucky devils). No more hard floors to sleep on or shaving on the kennel floor! We were wondering if there is anything she could try to encourage the hair to come back. ie. food supplements or maybe something we could massage into the skin.  The skin in smooth and unbroken and their is no itching.  I have heard that stress could be a factor with hair loss but I have seen with my own eyes how relaxed they are so would be suprised if this is the case. Any ideas??

Have they been seen by a vet?  They probably need examining to be sure but the fact they all have it suggested either something infectious or environmental.

Each one came at a different time from different rescue kennels, all with similar bald area's so its unlikely to be infectious.  The vet has checked them and thinks that the loss was due to their environment before they were rehomed.  My question is whether there is anything that she can use on the one that has the most hairloss to encourage the hair to grow back.

I have had Greyhounds for 13 years. The bald patches on the backlegs and thighs come in pups when they change coat, in ex-and racers due to stress of racing, sometimes it is in the genes. Mainly black and fawn dogs get it. After some years of couchlife it will eventually go away, in some dogs it never does. Nothing to worry about. Just feed them good food and codliver oil, not too much protein, since they are not racing anymore and keep them warm! (Cosy coats for rain and winter!!!) There are plenty of coats for them to buy anywhere!
Good luck and thanks for loving them!

Love,
Sylvie

My friend has a fawn Greyhound who was a "failed" racer. She's had him for about 5 years now I think but his thighs have always been nearly totally bald bless him. Nothing wrong with his skin and he has a wonderful life and the best of everything but the hair has never grown back.
