What do people wear to weddings these days?! I've got to go to a wedding on Saturday and i have nothing to wear! I live in jeans and jumper usually so i hardly ever wear going out clothes and i've tried on everything smart in my wardrobe and i don't fit into any of them! (iv'e put on a little weight in the last year or so, i used to be tiny!) I don't really know anyone going, the groom used to work with my boyfriend and i've met him a couple of times, but i don't know anyone else. What is acceptable for a 26 year old girl to wear to a wedding?!

Crumbs, cutting it fine kiddo :-p

IMO it's always better to wear a dress for weddings - we've been to a few recently and mostly with a high number of girls your age who'd opted for dresses whether going to the whole shebang or just the evening do :)

Next on-line usually has a good choice of different styles and materials.  As for the high street, probably Wallis or Principals for something that wont break the bank or perhaps Monsoon if you've got a little more to spend.

regards, Teri

On the Hight St, Zara is very good for wedding outfits and won't break the bank.  Oasis also have some very nice dresses at the moment.  As Teri says, Next is a safe bet usually.  If you're on a tight budget, check out New Look.  If you're feeling flush, Karen Millen.  If you end up buying something you know you'll never wear again, you can always sell it on Ebay afterwards and recoup  some of the cost.

sometimes you get the perfect outfit when you have hardly any time to choose.both of my girls have found really lovely dresses(cocktail style usually)at tkmax.they have some trendy and also some classic styles available.my 34 year old is going to a friends wedding soon and bought a dress with white background and large black polkadots.it's sleeveless with a slightly dipped back and largish collar.it has a black patent belt and she has some black patent heels to go with it.also one of those fascinators on a little alice band,in black.she looks stunning.the dress cost 15pounds and the headgear 7.debenham's have all the concessions under one roof, plus their own range and some lesser known stuff.one of their own ranges(can't remember which)has some lovely dresses, just right for weddings e.g 25pounds for a nice pink dress.

In reality there is so much option for what to wear that not everyone wears dresses to weddings these days. I went to a wedding last saturday and probably only half wore a dress. Smart trousers and nice top look good. Seeing as its summer you could get away with wearing (smart) white jeans or linen trouser and dress it up with a pretty top/ waistcoat and jewlerry and accessories.  Next do some very good clothes for these sorts of occasions.

There are tonnes of sales on at the mo, so I'd head out there and grab a bargain.

Don't forget that some of the bigger stores have personal shoppers (usually no charge) that could give you some fresh ideas.

I think trouser suits are quite flattering for all shapes and sizes - with a nice pair of heals.

Most weddings I've been to have a real mix and match of outfits.  But smart and classic will always go down well - as your young you could add some funky jewellery.  Accessosorise and New Look are good for that type of thing.

Mostly, feel comfortable, as you'll have more fun.............. Enjoy it and let us know how it goes.

Hi Lucyandmeg,

I went to a lovely wedding last year and I had no idea what to wear either! I'm not sure what kind of money you want to spend on your wedding outfit but I bought a gorgeous purple strapless dress from Monsoon which I wore with gold heels. Monsoon usually have a good selection of smart dresses. My dress had a lovely matching purple flower on the chest which came with the dress, but flowers and accessories are very 'in' at the moment so you could always buy a plain dress and jazz it up with some accessories - Matalan have a fab selection of flowers at the moment! My friend wore a fascinator in her hair which looked gorgeous, Claire's Accessories have fascinators and Oasis have a good selection at the moment too. I hope you enjoy your day, I love weddings :-)

a dress or skirt and nice top, not white or cream unless heavily patterned!

does the invitation give no idea what to wear?

You dont normally get a dress code on a  wedding invitiation, thats saved for birthdays and suchlike. Unless otherwise stated it is always very dressy and smart.

Good luck finding something, looking forward to hearing (and maybe seeing with a link :-) ) what you have bought.

Go and have a look in places like "Wallis" A little summer dress with matching handbag and shoes. Go to a store like Rackhams with consesions, There are a few places you can look then, under one roof. If you want a buget outfit go to "New look" there is loads of styles out there now that all ages wear.

I know I went to one and they were in suits what do you give the couple when they are both male! they loved the horseshoe thing and flowers. I just went with the flow!! its was very camp and very touching ceremony they had been together over 20 years.

Thanks everyone, i've managed to order a few dresses online, and just have to choose now. I'm dreading this, i'm not used to going out much these days, I'm not really the party type.

Next have some nice bits.
I am going to Ascot.I have a few dresses that I have already worn and feel comfy in. I am looking at the shrugs and boleros to add to something to make a new look. Hope you enjoy the wedding
