Topic Dog Boards / General / URGENT - Boxer DNA Needed for Cardiomyopathy Research UK
- By Boxacrazy [in] Date 22.04.09 06:54 UTC
The gene responsible for Boxer cardiomyopathy has not been found yet.
Hopefully in years to come there will be a DNA test for CM.
With this in mind I wish to reiterate the plea that Dr Cattanach has written to the dog press (Dog World and Our Dogs) with and that you may be able to help with as long as you have your dogs full pedigree (5 generations or more) information (and no whites aren't DQ'd from helping either!!!) if you wouldn't mind donating your dogs DNA (blood test) to help isolate the gene that causes this in our breed. He is particularly looking for dogs that are from CM free bloodlines as they need both DNA from clear and affected bloodlines to be able to do this research.
He is just 12 DNA samples short of CM free bloodlines. Twelve donations which would/could make a big impact for the breed's future as a whole.

Your vets may be lovely and not charge you for doing this as it is for research purposes. Or they may wish to charge you and costs may vary

If you contact Dr Cattanach he will advise you on what is needed. (Forms may also be downloaded from www.boxerbreedcouncil.co.uk)
His email address is bcattanach@steynmere.freeserve.co.uk

This is Urgent he needs those 12 samples to be with him by FRIDAY this week!!

YOUR BREED NEEDS YOU!! CAN YOU HELP THE BREED YOU LOVE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME AND LEAVE A LEGACY WE CAN ALL BE PROUD OF FOR OUR BREEDS WELLBEING!

> CM free bloodlines

As you probably know, mine are not and I can't be of any help in this instance but also urge anyone who can.

Boxacrazy, I think it might be worthwhile telling folk how they can find out if their dog carries these lines.

But Dr Cattanach may also need DNA samples from dogs that are down from at risk lines and he may not have samples
from the family that your dogs come down from please do check with him.

For those that aren't sure if your dogs are from at risk lines go to the Boxer breed council's website
here
http://www.boxerbreedcouncil.co.uk/cm.htm

and then click on the link DEDUCED BCM TRANSMITTING DOGS CLICK TO DOWNLOAD HERE

If you aren't sure please do contact Dr Cattanach and I'm sure he'd be only too pleased to answer your questions.

I have just spoken to Dr Cattanach and he has advised if you can't get the DNA to him by Friday but would still like
to help in the research by donating the DNA if you could let him know your intention to donate etc by Friday.
He is still able to to include the DNA donation in the research.

Thanks!!
