Hi everyone uhh dont know about this need some advice, at a dog show at the week end a man came up and indroduced himself and asked if I have ever thought of having my dogs portrait painted I said not really so he asked to take some more photo,s he had taken some already when we were in the ring, he asked for my e-mail address..which I gave he has sent an e-mail with pictures enclosed says he just want,s to paint portrait no obligation to my-self ..I know he would want me to buy it but where do I stand with this ???

If you want one done do a bit of reserch, there are lots of artists out there who are good and some who are great. You need to see a photo of a painting and make sure the likeness is good. A picture of say, a lab will look like a lab but wether it looks like your Lab is a different thing. PM me if you want Stan done and I will give you a name, she did Merlot and you have seen the result I think!!

Who was it? Steven Nesbitt did that many years ago, and I was delighted with the end result. But I was at liberty to not buy the paintint, in which case he would have offered it for sale to the general public,

If he paints the portrait and you dont want it what will he do with it? I wouldnt like a picture of my dog to be sold to anyone else, nor would i want someone i didnt know (or have a contract with) have pictures of my dog. you never know whos hands they could end up with.

You have it in writing that there is no obligation, so you are not obligated to buy the portrait :) If you don't want to buy the portrait he may want to use it for his portfolio anyway.

I must be weird because I have no problems with my dogs being used in this sort of way, the only thing that does bother me is photo's of my dogs being used on websites stating to be something that they are not such as one of our first imports being used on one website abroad stating that HE is a female and that HE has had pups!

It's not that i'm worried if he does a painting then it is up to me if I choose to buy it, but if he uses pictures of my dog for some other reason .. and I haven't any say in the matter where does that leave me!

He's the artist, he owns the copyright of the painting - unless he sells it.  Same as a photographer has the copyright of any photographs taken.  He would only use the painting to advertise his talents, or sell it.
