Having worked at a grooming school and run my own parlour for 16 years, I would suggest that you train at a grooming school and not a local college where they run a grooming course.  In the same way that it's worth travelling to buy a puppy from a reputable breeder, it's worth travelling for good training.  The quality of your training course will affect the quality the dogs that you turn out and so also affect the the price that you can charge.
I would also suggest that you aim to trim to breed standards, which will make you different to most other groomers who clip everything back to the skin regardless of the correct way to handle the coat for each breed.  Grooming to the breed standards will bring you in regular, well groomed dogs who will be a credit to you and their owners and you'll have a full diary throughout the year as opposed to once/twice a year clip offs.  There are many owners who will travel and pay well when they find a groomer who can make their pet look like the breed that they bought.
