Topic Dog Boards / General / Help finding place to rent that permits dogs
- By ScotLad [gb] Date 20.04.09 09:32 UTC
Hi folks
I am hoping that folks on here can be able to help me out.
I have got an opportunity to work in Greater London( Kingston upon Thames) expected to start in August and am looking for a place to rent initially.
Ideally within a 5mile radius. I am looking for a 1-2 roomed place that will permit dogs.
I have been in touch with most of the estate agents but so far have not been able to find anywhere willing to accept two perfectly( well ok usually!) behaved dogs.
I am a bit desperate and hence thought of using this board as there might be doggy people who may know someone in the area who may be able to help.
Thank you
Daran

Hi and welcome :-)
You'll have to speak to the landlords themselves and request accommodation.  There are a couple of Landlord Forums if you google them, sign up and ask there.
Good luck, there are landlords out there that accept pets but they will manage the property themselves and not use agents.

Hi,
I've been in that situation a couple of times (although not in London).  I found that gumtree was the best place - you tend to have private landlords on there, so speaking to them direct you are often able to convince them it won't be a problem.  Also, if you can give them landlord references if you've rented before with dogs, that seems to go down well.  Some of them also seem more keen if you pay a higher bond or agree to have the carpets professionally cleaned before leaving.  Good luck!

Thank you both for your suggestions. Not sure where I can find landlords forum, any links would be appreciated. I am quite prepared to pay a bond or whatever is needed.
Cheers

Going through private renting its usually a little more flexible. Especially if you can get the landlord to meet you and see how well behaved your dog is. You can also say you are more than happy to have a clause in the contract about the dog and if it causes any damage etc

hi, i have had this problem before with private landlords and 'anti pet' contracts. Have you suggested a 'pet deposit'?? i suggested it to my landlord and he agreed to it. i paid him £150 (on top of normal deposit) and had a clause in the lease saying that i kept said pets under control i.e not barking and infuriating neighbours etc and he holds final decision on the type of animal. So if you leave and the house is not up to scratch, say a scratched door or faeces stain etc, then he would have in theory 1 months rent and £150 on top to repair damage etc.
My landlord has agreeed to this, he said he holds final decision, but allowed me too move in with my skunk and 1 dog, and has agreed to one more.
I found agencies a lot more difficult to go with due to this. But look through the paper and call a few private landlords, ask if you can have a pet, if they say no, then suggest more deposit.
Also it may be worth inviting them to meet the dog, but could be timeconsuming when they can get someone who has no pets.

or put on an ad that you are looking for a place that takes dogs, then anyone who offers you one knows what they are getting

really??? wow

yeah. she has been descented (the skunk. not the landlord lol). and has a cage etc. my landlord is good i have 2 admit. As long as rent paid, no bother from he then he keeps away. Its a very blissful relationship lol!
