Topic Dog Boards / General / Questioning a vet's procedures

I've been thinking about our beloved Bentley who passed away last year and now a friends beloved dog has passed away today.

I am questioning how much do the vets honestly do for our dogs when they are ill and have to be taken in. Do they really do all they can, how competent are they when it comes to surgery, should they really allow a dog home when its still not well and not all avenues have been exhausted, how about telling an owner that its not an emergency case for the dog to go back again?

I am really questioning the vets i am at now, due to Bentley and now a friends dog, i don't know the full ins and outs of her dog passing away, only that she said he was in surgery today and his symptoms leading up to surgery. She is obviously upset by whats happened but i am not sure how you can question how good a vet is and also did they do anything wrong or not, how can we know if they messed up anywhere??
We were told not to waste our money on an autopsy as it wouldn't show anything, but my mind is working overtime now and thinking well did they say that as they were trying to hide something?

Sorry for the ramblings, but just not sure how much to trust vets these days.

at this point you will never be able to find out if something went wrong and they didn't let on, in Bentleys case at least.

From my view it boils down to if your not comfortable then try and find someone new. for one thing its not something worth gambling about, if you don't think they are doing the job then its not worth the risk. for the other lesser reason it's your money and frankly they should be competing for your loyalty by convincing you they are worth it.

The vet that i am not sure about doesn't like my breed or as it seems any other large breed i mention in the working group. Not sure he agrees with breeding of pedigree dogs either, well only gundogs by the way i have seen him act.
There are other vets at the practice and always make sure that i see them now and to be honest i am happy with these vets, the nursing staff are lovely as well.
The one vet i worry about also does a lot of operations and in an emergency would he do his best for the dog due his breed or not.

No i've made my mind up i'm moving surgeries after my new boy has his second jab, much as i will miss the nurses and receptionists, this has been playing on my mind far too long now and it keeps coming back and niggling me.
I have a high recommendation for a vets even closer to me and this vet breed and shows too. Will be calling them tomorrow to go onto their books.

you can always try them and see, it doesn't have to be a perminant switch.

i say see how it goes, you need a vet whos skills you trust and whos opinion you value
