Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Getting our Border Terrier to eat her food
- By Casey [gb] Date 15.04.09 12:44 UTC
We have just rehomed one of our dogs and the one that is still with us is off her food. It has been a week now and I know it is understandable for her to be off her food but I want to get her back into a routine. She normally eats her food straight away but the past week I have been having to leave it down all day for her and she has just been picking at it as and when and finally finishing it off on an evening. For the past two days all I have done is put it down for an hour and then if she hasn't eaten it taken it away (which she hasn't, only a tiny bit) - is this the right thing to do to get her to eat properly again??

I would certainly offer the food, and not eaten within 10 mins remove it ,and offer her it later, she will eat when hungray, Borders usually dont like to go without food too long!

If she thinks the food will always be there, she's unlikely to do more than pick (would you?)  As above I'd take away all uneaten food after 10 mins if she isn't actually eating it and only give food at the next normal meal time.  You could also try offering a little less food for a few days until she's enthusiastic again ;)

ive always taken the food off our dogs 15mins. after feeding as this does encourage them to look forward to the next meal.you could also try mixing frozen tripe or a tin of sardines in with the food, dogs just seem to lovee the smell of these.although ive never used them some people say to mix in chubbs as these are another food dogs cant resist because of the smell.hope this helps :-)
