We are picking up pup on Tuesday. The breeder is 4.5 -5hrs away, and the pup has no vaccinations. My question is what do we do about toilet breaks on the journey home?
We had an 8 hour drive with ours and used puppy pads. We only made 2 stops - the first one we laid the pad out in the boot and put a little water on it and he went ok. The second time we put the pad on the ground (making sure he stayed on it) and he went ok again.
The rest of the time he slept soundly in a really comfy crate with lots of blankets and a toy from his family home which had his mums smell on it.
I think we overdid it with a whole packet of pads, loads of extra blankets, towels, wipes, food, toys......the list goes on.
Good luck with your wee one....you will be grinning like crazy the whole way home!!!

Have a supply of newspapers to put the puppy onto when you stop for a break.

I just wanted to say what an exciting time you are going to have

Oh how exciting :)
I live near Edinburgh and have collected pups from Devon, Cambridge, Wales etc and have never let them out enroute. I've let them travel free in the back of the car/van (enclosed by dog guard and tailgate guard). I put masses of newspaper down, covered by thin vetbed and just cleaned up any mess when I get home. As long as they don't have to lie in any mess it doesn't seem to worry them. Mostly they just sleep all the way anyway.

We have this same worry, but our journey is only 3 hours! Are you by any chance going to Surrey to get a flatcoat? Think we might be getting siblings! ;-)

Yes we are getting siblings, I wondered from your post a couple of weeks ago and it was confirmed last week I have pm'd you. I am beyond excited now, have been nesting all week, bedding, crate, puppy proofing the garden it's just like giving birth but without the painful bits! Spent a couple of afternoons with the puppies last week they are beyond gorgeous!

Now I am really jealous LOL My flatti will be a few years down the line not the right time now

So thats 4 of us getting a puppy within the week. I pick mine up today.. Its all very exciting, yes there will be the nights which lack sleep due to toilet duties, but very quickly they will diminish(hopefully).
Good luck to all who are getting a pup, wish we all lived nearby then we could have our own little puppy party.

Yes we take newspaper for piddle breaks, kitchen roll, water/bowls, poo bags, carrier bags, wet wipes, a spare peice of vet bed in case of accidents. Just about everything but the kitchen sink lol!! :-P
We'll have to have a cyber puppy party, I'll bring meatballs, and a dog cookie cake:-) (where are the emoticons on here).
Suejaw what sort are you getting?

As in food or breed of puppy?
I'll bring a couple of pyramids with live cake treats inside for them to play with.
I'm getting another Berner.
Thought i'd answer my own question now..hehe
> with live cake treats
Are these the sort that scantily clad ladies jump out of? I think that might be a wee bit inappropriate for such young dogs:-) lol Mind you my son and husband would be v. impressed hee hee
You are probably on your way now good luck and have a whiff of puppy breath for me!
Thats if we all get a good nigh sleep otherwise we will all fall asleep and they will all create havoc.

We picked up our Flatcoat puppy 3 weeks ago and luckly for us we only had to travel 1 1/2 hrs, so no toilet stops just alot of loving to try and stop him shaking.
I just find it funny that this little bundle of fluff can take up all your day and I had totally forgotten what sleepless nights are like after 15yrs...
Rachel,
Are you back yet? How was the trip? How's my nephew?

He's asleep under the settee! Screamed his head off in the car for the first 20 mins then slept all the way home :-)
Doesn't want to sleep in his bed, even though I've covered the crate, much prefers the cosy cave under the settee - Tarn was just the same and used to try to squeeze under even when he was getting too big, lol!
Your big bruiser was looking very cute today, good luck with your trip home.

where are all those flat coats pics !!!!

Hi Rachel and Debbie - just found all your messages! Great that you've both made contact so you can compare sleepless nights! :-)
Debbie - see you tomorrow!

Tran, he is adorable. Its major puppy time here on this topic, me with mine on friday you with yours today and then(can't recall name
)Debbie i think gets hers tomorrow.
Woohoo for the little ones..
You can see my boy on my link on my profile..
Enjoy and lets hope the weather holds out, its great fun for them to enjoy the outside.
Aaaaaaah lovely, I showed it to my boy then he went into his crate curled up and went to sleep, not! He sang most of the way from Jo's to Aldershot. But after being introduced to his sister and a friends cocker he boldly explored the garden, stole all the cocker's toys and took them under "his" bush! Played some more and was great all the way home the roads were good and we got home without stopping or accidents. Will try and put piccies up tomorrow. He is just wonderful very cuddly and he has a great smile!

Aww, blackandgrey and Tarn, your pupsters are beautiful - hope you're enjoying them! :-)
Poor you all that anticipation and then having to wait another week, hope you used it to store up sleep. My young man is going through till about 5am then out for a wee and back to bed till 6-6:30. But that is with the crate pulled up to the bed so that I can put my fingers in to comfort him! Good Luck with your pick up this week

Picked up my 9 week old boy last Weds eve. Only had a 2 1/2 journey home and he was fine, happy in the car and no puddles. Let him sleep in his crate by our bed for the first eve and when he grizzled I poked my fingers in the crate as reassurance. 2nd night he was downstairs in his crate by my older boy and he only woke us up once to say he had done a wee! Last 2 nights he has gone from 10.30 to 5.30 with only a small puddle on the puppy pad. Thankfully we're all getting sleep, it's just keeping up with his energy during the day that's a problem! Ah bless, joys of puppy parenthood.
I agree with all your comments. We left house 3 am for Corwall got there 10 30i sh stayed with the breeder chatting and paperwork 2 hours,Set off again detour to Gloucester to see some friends and pick up half a pig .Ruby slept most of the journey had 2 wees on paper in the car,got back to Herts 10 oclock went to bed 11 o clock Ruby in cage by the bed, never heard a sound until 4 a m,she had a wee and I actualy put her in my bed and we all slept until 8.But as you say the next day you feel worn out just keeping an eye on them,Must admit she hasn't had any accidents in the house yet.Good luck everyone with your new pups.
