Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Won't eat from metal bowl

Hi,
I bought a couple of stainless steel clip on feeding bowls for my dog's cage.  I thought they would come in handy on the odd occasions when she has to be left on her own for awhile.  Unfortunately, she is accustomed to eating out of plastic bowls, and absolutely refuses to eat or drink out of the metal ones. I've tried coaxing, putting treats in them, etc. without luck.  I think she saw her reflection in one of the bowls and thought it was another dog!

I've looked on the internet but can't find any plastic clip on bowls.  Any suggestions?  Have I wasted my money?

Have you tried giving her meals in it? If she doesn't get fed from the plastic bowl, hunger will take over - it worked when I changed mine over to metal bowls, it wasn't long before they realised the plastic bowls weren't coming back :)

try putting a smaller plastic bowl inside the metal one for a while?

The metal bowl actually comes out of the holder, so if I could just find a plastic bowl that fits the holder (and has a lip around the top to rest on the holder) it would solve my problem!

My dog Domino would never eat or drink from a metal dish and we couldn't understand why till one night we heard it from one of the other dogs, Domino didn't like it when his metal name tag on his collar clinked against the dishes.  I now use plastic parrot coop cups.
That was for Papillons though.

Luxway do plastic non spill bowles which fit a holder for cages and you can take the lid off and fits as a normal bowle. :)

Have a look at these plastic crock bowls - they come in the same sizes as metal ones, I've used an 8" one (I think they call this size large - may need to check).  They are also nice and heavy so don't slide about if used on the floor and they can go in the dishwasher too.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. I have a toy breed (Japanese Chin) and I think the metal bowl is 5".

Hiya,

Don't know if these might be of use - about 6 inches http://www.canineconcepts.co.uk/item--CROC-crate-bowl-1-2L-capacity--croc-crate-dog-bowl---dogs

our king charles puppy wouldnt eat from a steel bowl at first and he was unsure of drinking out of one and it dawned on me he was unsure of his reflection in the water,we didnt make a big thing about it and he soon took no notice of it.also flat faced breeds like the king charles like shallow dishes to eat from weve found, our timo has one thats quite wide in diameter but shallow only about 1" high and he prefers that.as for the clip on ones,we put the bowl high enough for him to drink but too high for him to really see the bottom of the bowl so he didnt see his reflection. hope this helps ,roy.

Just to update you and give you a laugh - I had just about given up getting my girl to drink out of the metal bowl, when I had an inspiration.  Yes, I knelt down on all fours and pretended to lap from the bowl!!  She was over in a flash, and that was the end of the problem.

I wonder if this means I am definitely the "pack leader", haha??

She was hungry and thought you might eat it all!!
