I am devastated!. Coming home from YKC Camp on Friday, I had my 4 GSPs , Min Pin and Hannahs Toy Poodle Sweetie in the car. As I came off the motorway and turned the car lost control and went across the carriageway. (The police later found out there was mud on the road which caused the crash)
I was hit full on by a four wheel drive and poor Sweetie is dead. Even though I could not avoid it I feel responsible. Hannah is gutted as she and Sweetie were joined at the hip. Nothing can be said to make things better. I know I was lucky as I only have a broken rib and severe bruising from seatbelt but words cannot describe how badly I feel. If only she had been crated like the gundogs were. They have only cuts and bruises and Gaby has a lump that the vet wants to keep an eye on. They were traumatised because the police had to smash the back window to get them out. Kind people rushed them to the vets but Sweetie died by the time they got there. No words can express to Hannah how I feel. She adored her and is lost. I can't stop crying.
Please all of you when travelling, no matter how small your dog, crate them.

What an awful thing to happen, you have had a terrible shock so it's not surprising you are so upset. You are very lucky it was not an awful lot worse, and I just want you to know that I am so sorry and that I am thinking of you all.

Oh Sue,
I"m so sorry....that's one of my worst nightmares to happen to anyone :( My deepest sympathies. I hope your wounds heal soon (inner and outer hurts).
If you keep on visualizing your accident (waking and sleeping) past a week and feel like you just experienced it, please please please see a medical professional. Post traumatic stress syndrome is terrible to suffer through without help. :(
This is so terrible for you and Hannah. I'm sending you all my best wishes. My condolences on losing Sweetie. I wish I could give you a big hug and make it all better.

Thanks everyone. It helps to talk to other doggy people because friends and family without dogs do not understand how you can be so upset over 'just a dog'

Hello Sue,
It is so difficult to find any words to express the horror and sympathy felt on hearing something like this. Or indeed to find the words that might give some little comfort.
The pain you are feeling 'mentally' must be immense. My prayers are with you all. Do not be hard on yourself, what happened was beyond your control remember that, but the way you obviously managed to handle the situation prevented more fatalities from happening.
If someone should remark or be surprised by the grief that you and Hannah share in the loss of Sweetie, feel SORRY for them. Life is life, whether human or animal and should be valued. These people have obviously never loved a pet that deeply - think what they have missed!
God's Blessings to Sweetie, and God Bless and bring comfort to you, Hannah and your much loved dogs.

Poor Sweetie - you could never have forseen the accident and its tragic consequences, my heartfelt sympathies to you and Hannah.
It is very considerate of you to post the warning about not crating dogs in transit so people can learn from this incident, and perhaps change their own habits.
Hope your injuries heal soon

Star and Hannah,
i am so sorry to read your awful news, especially as I was involved in a crash recently with the dogs in the car. They were ok, thankfully, but it could so easily have been worse.
There is a very good book called 'Goodbye, dear friend', which may help to give you some comfort, it helped me come to terms with the shock of losing my Whippet when he was hit by a car.
Thinking of you both.
