Topic Other Boards / Foo / Degu name suggestions please

Imagination at the ready please.......Today we have expanded our menagerie, we now have two 'ickle' furry Degu 8 week old brothers and, yep, we are completely brain dead when it comes to naming them.

For those that aren't familiar with 'gu's they look like large Gerbils but to me, they also have a squirrel like appearance. They are highly intelligent and will become very affectionate given time. They originate from the lowland areas of Chile.

So....come on people give me some ideas....please..... because at the moment my Daughter and I are calling them 'bully' and 'victim'....as you can guess, they are currently vying for dominance and although they snuggle up together there is still clearly a hierarchy that has to be settled :-)

OH suggested Beavis & Butthead but me thinks this is a tad 'too common', ;-) something 'exotic' seeing as they are classed as exotics would be nice or failing that something 'different'. Daughter suggested Roscoe & Jimmy???

Looking forward to some ideas please ;-)

Jo

Juan Roman and Juan Pablo

i just like the names :)
- By hairypooch Date 13.03.09 22:49 UTC
Nope, good idea though ;-) the less syllables the better, just a bit too much of a mouthful as they can 'learn their names' :-) I came up with something with as many syllables earlier but wouldn't care to repeat it here :-P
- By Astarte Date 13.03.09 22:51 UTC
lol but you can shorten lol!

Mmmm...I'm sorta liking the names BUT....I have to ask suz1985, why kanga & roo??? Apart from the obvious......:-D Loving Rio ;-) ;-) not really liking Cruz as it reminds me of the Beckhams sprog. I have got that right haven't I? Probably not knowing me <rolls eyes and sighs>

Puyu and Huapi

Puyuhuapi is a beautiful place in very southern Chile.. Glaciers and hot springs side by side.. :-)

How many Labs now? Please update me when you get a minute between 'canine' 'Lab'ority & negotiations ;-)

BUT....back to the past.....please educate on pronunciation for said 'gu' names....J and I are sitting here having a very 'slight' difference of opinion ;-)

I saw a couple of Degus at PAH on the weekend, they looked to me very much like Chinchillas - in their underwear ! LOL

How about Mutt and Jeff ?  :-D

( My Chinchillas were called ....  Muff and Jett ;)  Muff was a 'normal' colour and Jett was a Black Smoke ;) )
- By kayc [gb] Date 13.03.09 23:26 UTC

Puyuhuapi is pronounced ... are you ready for this  (eek)

Pooh - yeah - w~ - pee  (bigger blush)

What....tired....again??? <up, catching, age> Not you....NEVER :-P :-P

J is loving Rough (believe me.....he is...in more ways than one) & Tumble. Me? I'm losing the will as Charse has now come 'alive' so all common sense has deserted.....hey..what's new? :-D

NOT bad though.... considering.....;-) ducks head very deliberately and waits for 'fallout'....<obsequeous grin

How about Dis and aster ?
- By hairypooch Date 13.03.09 23:44 UTC
How VERY appropriate considering they are.. creatures, small, furry, but funnily enough not Rodent in this case.

As for blushing, today when buying them, I was told quite categorically by the assistant that he couldn't 'sex' them as they were just too young.Well....suffice to say that I could and we had a rather... ummm heated debate as to why I thought they were boys...put it this way....you would have to be a visitor to this planet to NOT know.

But, nope, I really couldn't bear to call 'poo' & 'wee' when it came to feeding and exercise but may just say it inadvertantly if their cage went just that bit too long :-P
- By Teri Date 13.03.09 23:46 UTC
assemble into coherent sentence:-

Oh, and I think J's got very good taste BTW ;)
- By hairypooch Date 14.03.09 00:01 UTC
Ummmm...The > wind > too > close> sailing> - me? Perhaps am gonna drown? <evilicious grin> :-P

I sincerely hope that you are NOT insinuating that moi is 'ruf & ready' - RUF? maybe..but ready? NEVER!

And....and...and...for your info - Ying is certainly not in harmony with Yang so go put your Mo in Jo and guess what you get? A nostalgic sweet memory. ;-)

I feel a bit awful... my 'Goos are called...... um...

The Goo's.

Theres four of them (all brothers) and they are absolutely identical, except when food goes into the cage and then I can tell one from the other three by his behaviour.. so his name is Fatgoo. (Hes a greedy piglet and sits in the food bowl going Mine! Mine! at the others).

For some reason and I think it is because there are four of them, they have never got beyond the 'will take food from your hands and then pee off and hide with it' stage of tameness, no matter how many hours i spent sat on the floor by the cage with them (and no matter how many tasty dried flower head potpourri things I offered either, but interesting to know there IS actually a use for pot pourri!)

So.. I fear they will have to remain collectively named, with Fatgoo as their chief and evil dictatorish leader - they do make a most EXCELLENT 'animal room door is open, dogs are raiding rat/goo food bags' alarm - their 'Danger Danger!' squeaks carry really well through the house and Dilly dog is horrified that the furry little gits give him away!

Am I the only awful person with small furries that dont have their own names? (and anyone else got four identical ones that they cant tell apart either?)
- By hairypooch Date 21.03.09 03:51 UTC
*loud cheers* yesss Louise I have 'Goo poos' ;-)

We have finally decided on names for them <rolls eyes> after many a heated debate between Daughter and self we have decided to call them...*drum roll*..... Boris - after the Lord Mayor of London, won't elaborate 'goo much but suffice to say he is appropriately named
:-P   aannd his Bro is called Norris after the wonderful creature that is a 'Slow Norris' - very slow, shy but particular.

They are very sociable, wonderfully intelligent, amusingly competitive....but you will know that anyway.

Yes, they love dog biscuits......when they're not squabbling over them :-D But what does the 'teeth chatter' mean? Doris...sorry I mean Norris...-he is a bit of a whinger - does this frequently even when he is in my arms and seemingly happy.

My chin has now adopted the sobriquet 'Ch-arse' his name is Charlie but seeing as he is such an (see last 4 letters of name) it suits or on a good day, satan *flashes red eyes with ears flat to head* - very high maintenance, my *sweet* 'ickle Charse <sarcastic smile> NOT!

Any other tips would be great and yes thank you so much, I have looked at degutopia and learnt so much before I got them :-)

ROFPML :-P :-P

>Am I the only awful person with small furries that dont have their own names? (and anyone else got four identical ones that they cant tell apart either?)

No you're not awful, in fact you are probably normal - me? I'm slightly batty IE, I just cannot settle until all members have been named *sad smile* even if we don't actually use those names when addressing them! And if it makes you feel better we used to take in rescue rabbits and no I couldn't tell them apart because they were nearly....all the same sex..and the same colour - plus in those days I wasn't quite soo..umm...yep...soft as I am now ;-)
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 21.03.09 09:59 UTC
We used to have Jirds - the ones in between Gerbils and Degus in terms of size - two boys too but they started to fight and one was getting really badly beaten so we had to separate them - they were called Chip and Dale :-D
After they went to the 'great desert in the sky' we got three rats (I know, I know but they are actually very sweet). They are Jasper (cos I liked the name), Casper (cos he had a white face like a ghost and it rhymed) and Harry (cos he had a little harry potter scarlike marking in the hair on his face).
We had black rabbits called Sooty and Sweep at one point and I couldn't tell them apart either, both jet black and bunny like :-D :-D. My mother still can't tell my ragdoll cats apart - despite the fact that a. one is bigger, b. one is mitted so has white paws and c. said mitted one has a distinctive white mark on her nose - I think my mum may need new glasses :-D

Good luck with your Degu's , I hope you are right about them both being boys (listens for the sound of tiny pattering paws :-D :-D )

Buy a coconut and clean out the sweet stuff and let them nibble on the shell. Im feeding him excel guinea pig food in the orange bag. I think were going to buy a friend for gandalf as he is lonely. It must be that as he has all his toys and food for 'environmental enrichment' (my 1st year degree taught me something) but hes still not entirely happy.

He was taken back to PAH with a friend because the renting previous owners landlord said that he could no longer have them. So he had a buddy, him and his buddy faught in PAH so they were sold separately. I think it was the stress of being re-homed new environment etc etc so they had a rumble. Ill obviously introduce them slowly and get another boy i have a spare cage so if things dont go right i can keep them apart. We bought him a ball the other day but he just chewed straight through it and escapeyed! He only talks to us occasionally so i think if we got him a friend they could chatter and be merry.
