If you search for Haemostat on Ebay, you'll find a pair in the UK for £1.60 + £1 p&p.

- By white lilly [gb] Date 13.03.09 19:50 UTC
i have done this before :) and i do have some .. just wanted these in my kit as it makes things alittle easyer then all fingers and thumbs :):) well i was lol xx
- By sam Date 13.03.09 22:21 UTC

- By white lilly [gb] Date 13.03.09 22:24 UTC
LOL sam i just dont know :) ...do you use floss ??? ..i have big fingers and thay get in the way :):) xx
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.03.09 22:36 UTC
I'm sure Sam, like me, has never had a use for such things. The bitch does it all by herself, and in 30 years I've never had to interfere.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 13.03.09 22:52 UTC
youve been very lucky jg :) ive had to help with 4 out the last litter and 1 before that ....theres not many that can sit back and not have to help in any way at all xx or is it down to the breed of dog ??? maybe !! just wondering !!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.03.09 22:53 UTC Edited 13.03.09 22:56 UTC
Do you not think perhaps you jumped in too soon, and didn't give the bitch time to sort things out herself?

I've never lost a puppy yet, stillborn or later on.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 13.03.09 23:03 UTC
no jeang i dont think so ..my girl had 2 still born with last litter and i didnt do anything she did it all her self :( it was the last pup i had to help her with as this took many hours and she was soooooo tired ..if i hadnt she would have lost another :( ...x
- By white lilly [gb] Date 13.03.09 23:06 UTC
but this is a different breed and im not going to step in inless i really have too ....do you still stay with my girls at whelp ??? and if so why ??? :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.03.09 23:08 UTC
Cords, if they need human interference, are best gripped by fingers, any blood wihtin squeezed towards the puppy, then the cords crushed and torn between the thumbnails, which mimics the breakage by the dam's teeth. A clean cut bleeds. Crushing and tearing seals the bloodvessels and therefore minimises blood loss and risk of either hernia or infection.

>do you still stay with my girls at whelp ??? and if so why ???

Not with your girls ;-) - that's your job! I stay with mine, of course. An overlarge whelp might get stuck and need assistance to be born. But I keep a watchful eye at a distance, and only step in if there's an emergency. Whelping is (or should be) as natural a process as possible.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 13.03.09 23:17 UTC
lol sorry ive had a little drink tonight ;) ....yes ...I keep a watchful eye at a distance, and only step in if there's an emergency. Whelping is (or should be) as natural a process as possible.
....i do agree jg ...and i will be doing this as i will be alone this time and im alot calmer then OH :) xx

Absolutely how it should be IMO/IME ;)
- By newfiedreams Date 13.03.09 23:57 UTC
Exactly, which is why floss is good if needed! I just can't see the sense in spending money on things that aren't necassary! The only time I will interfere is if the Dam is getting a bit too obsessive trying to clean up and around the puppy umbilical cord...usually maiden Dams...otherwise leave them to it from a safe enough distance to step in.

Give up the drink hun, 'aint doing ya any favours!!! ;-) :-o
- By white lilly [gb] Date 14.03.09 00:11 UTC

- By newfiedreams Date 14.03.09 00:16 UTC
Honestly...you need to come out drinking with the big girls so you can take it!!! :-)
- By JeanSW Date 14.03.09 00:59 UTC
I ordered these.

I honestly don't know why - they've never been used.  :-)

I probably thought it was a good idea at the time.   When I've had to do it myself, I've just torn like Mum would.  I have never had one bleed to death yet!  Although, I have had an over zealous mum go a bit too close, and keep styptic to hand.
- By tina s [gb] Date 14.03.09 07:12 UTC
no need for them at all! the bitch bites the cord thats her job! just have scissors for emergency and blood stopa in case one bleeds a bit
- By ice_queen Date 14.03.09 10:56 UTC

Please tell me you didn't do it like the mum and you used your hands and fingers!!! :-D

of course hands but then i wear surgical gloves

I've never had a bitch not cut (or chew rather) cords, but in cats it's more common than not for them not to bother, and I've had over 50 litters of kittens. I've however never tied the cord, ever. The vets always do when they do a c-section but I cannot see the need.I'd have thought both clamps and anything else could possibly be risky as anything that isn't meant to be there could be removed by the mother if they felt it necessary.

thanks every1 i see every1 as there own  way of doing things :):):) xx
- By sam Date 14.03.09 20:49 UTC
perhaps what i should have said more specifically is that i have managed all these years without cord clamps, not that i havent assisted the whelpings. I am with every bitch that whelps and help virtually every one in breaking cord,,,,,,,just not with cord clamps!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 14.03.09 21:03 UTC
Hi sam , do you have to help with the cord because of the breed ? or is there another reason ? just wondering thats all xx
- By Blue Date 14.03.09 22:13 UTC
I help with the cord etc Never " had to" but I do.  We all do our own things and have our own methods. I personally don't wait. I sit at the side of the whelping box from start to finish whether 3 hours or 24 hours.  crippled for days after but that is what suits me :-)  I help the bitch get the puppy out of the bag, clean it and get it 100% warm and dry..  Never had a bitch that showed any signs of unhappiness at me helping all 100% fantastic mothers.

I use my nails on the cord ( super clean hands) .  Not fussy on clamps etc.
- By newfiedreams Date 14.03.09 23:07 UTC
I don't think they do mind if they're part of your pack! I certainly find it a very 'bonding' experience with mine...they seem to like knowing there's someone there to help them...
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 15.03.09 18:11 UTC
Well in 20 years of my dogs having pups either myself of my bitch has cut the cord, never had the need for anything else, though it is the part that worries me the most!
