Topic Dog Boards / General / kooiker coat?
- By stamboom [gb] Date 13.03.09 13:38 UTC
hi,

i have a 12 month old kooikerhondje and she has a wirey part of coat on her back, it is much longer and corser than the rest of her coat. kooikers are supposed to have a silky coat.

kooiker coats are not fully developed until they are 24 months, any i de what is is?

she was from a litter of four bitches, i have seen two of them and one has much more of this myterious coat, but it lays better on her back.

what should i do?

i am going to breed her with a dog that has the best coat i think i have seen, so hopfully the pups want get it.

You need to speak to the breeder.  Would worry me that the coat is incorrect as I've never seen one with a wiry coat.

You don't mean that you are planning to mate her now do you?  If this is just a development stage in the coat your bitch will have outgrown it before you need to start thinking of the best dog for her.

Presumably your breeder, if experienced, is likely to have seen this before and will be able to give you the best advice.  It may be something that occurs in her lines or she/he can tell you if it's a fault.  Either way I'm sure the breeder would want to know.

I think I saw in another of your posts that you show your bitch.  Have you had any feedback from other owners or exhibitors?  If your breeder is unable to help then these people might be in a good position to advise.

What do you mean by wiey?  Like a terrier or just not a silky as others?

You could try sofening it with a good quality conditioner when you bath her.  This may help.

As for breeding her, don't choose the best coat but also construction.

Also talk to your breeder?  Where did you get her from?

(Were you at Mid herts?  I *think* I saw you and your bitch there.....)

no im not going to breed now, im going to breed when she is atleast two years, but the dog lives in holland so unless there is a dog in england i will breed with first, she may be three or four before i can even get her over there, but breeding with her isnt a big thing, i would like to but not yet.....!

oh and she had an extreme moulting season, and the wirey bit has gone.

it was thick, not silky and alot of it. the hair is still slightly course, but its much better
