Topic Dog Boards / Health / Blood in my dogs poo
- By loucon [gb] Date 13.03.09 11:26 UTC
Hi everyone, wondered if anyone had any ideas about this topic. My dog has had blood in her poo which is very sloppy (sorry for the detail) and we have an appointment at the vets this afternoon. She just isnt herself, curled up in her basket, head hanging down etc, obviously not right. Also last night she was sick, just the once. Anyone had these symptons before etc, any advice. Can't wait to get her the vet and see what's up, i hate seeing her like this and havent left her at all cos feel so sorry for her

Fresh red and/or watery blood is often a sign of tiny blood vessels bursting due to inflammation and excessive straining.  If the blood is very dark, tar like, it is a sign of digested blood which is generally much more serious.

In either event a vet check is advisable but since she's been off colour, and had D & V the chances are she's got a tummy bug which is making her feel miserable and may need sorted with ABs.  At least you'll have her in the right hands shortly.

best wishes, please update cause when you can
Teri :)

This may not be good news, I have a feeling what this could be but yes come back to tell us what the vet said.

Like a lot on here -- I have several ideas, but you are going to get a definite answer from your vet, and you are right to get a quick appointment.  Let us know how you get on.  Jean

How did your girl get on at the vet?

Hi all, she was checked out at the vet, and he gave her a good look at. Temperature is normal, explained about the runny poo and there being the blood in it. He said that it is more than likely something she ate or a tummy bug, and the blood could be from straining to go. He said that we could send a stool sample off but with it being Friday it wouldn't go anywhere for a few days anyway, so may aswell go down the route of thinking it is a tummy bug so.................... he gave her a 3 days antibiotic injection and a 3 day anti -imflamitry injection because he said her backside is inflamed. He has also given me 3 tins of Royal Canin sensitivity food and Pro-Kolin paste to put on her food 3 times a day. He said to see how she goes and if she still doesnt seem right to take her back in 3 days or so.

Hi loucon,

thanks for the update :)  It's much the route I'd expect your vet would go down given her symptoms but of course the professional expertise and hands on exam could tell him if there was likely to be a more sinister cause which thankfully seems unlikely.

The bland food coupled with the prokaolin will help rest and soothe her insides and the meds are probably just a precaution.

Hopefully she'll be her normal self again very soon,
best wishes, Teri

thanks for that. I was glad that he gave her the antibiotic in an injectiion, which goes into her system and starts working straight away rather than a tablet i think. Hopefully your right and the food and the prokolin with help sooth her and get her on the start of the mend. Hate seeing her like this. She has eaten a little bit of the food, first thing she has eaten for 2 days.
Thanks for all that great advice
