Topic Dog Boards / Health / Insurance claim for Mange
- By BarkingMad16 [gb] Date 12.03.09 12:18 UTC
Hi everyone, just wondered if anyone has had to put a claim in for mange treatment before with an insurance company. They have paid for bloods, atopica (dog had allergic reaction to the mite) steriods and all the consultations but will not pay for the Stronghold! This seems crazy to me as it is this that actually fixes the problems! Before I ring them to query I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.  I am insured with Petplan who have always paid up for everything in the past and I have made lots of claims with my problem GSD's - bless them.

Huskygal - thank you! :-)

I've had the costs of wormers deducted from an expensive claim even though these were part of a range of drugs used to rule out the possibility of giardia - the dog's regular worming was up to date at the time and this was a week long course of panacur granules used specific only to the illness being investigated.  I queried it with them but nope, wouldn't budge on it, and in the grand scheme of things it wasn't a huge amount for me to contribute - more the principle that annoyed me because of the circumstances!

Thanks for your reply, I had two boxes of Stronghold at £40.00 a box so I would prefer not to pay this! lol.  I will ring them. thanks again.

Yep, that's quite a bit more than me  I think mine came to about £12 or so but it's a few years back so I can't quite remember....

Perhaps get your vet to write a letter for them specific to the use of the stronghold - it may make a difference.  They'll have mentioned it on their section of the claim form but it may not stand out as being used for the specific purpose rather than the client just stocking up for future needs!

Good luck, I hope they reimburse you.
regards, Teri

A few years ago a dog of mine had to have worming tablets as part of the treatment for IBD my insurance company would not pay out until my vet spoke to them that this was the only way they could treat and then they happily paid. I do hope you also manage to get payment

Most insurance companies will not pay for preventative treatment which is what Stronghold is as it kills the new born mites and stops re-infection. It seems unfair if it is also being used to stop an already acquired infection. But I think given a chance not to pay up then they wont.
