Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Buttered toast???
- By Jacey [gb] Date 11.03.09 09:20 UTC
Friend has told me I should be feeding my puppy buttered toast occasionally - should I?  I've never heard of this!  Years ago, when I had my last puppy (12 years) people used to say weetabix was good for puppy breakfasts - I never really understood why and never fed it.  Has the buttered toast succeeded this or is it a good idea?

I would say a definite no, no.  Bread isn't any good for dogs and I doubt butter does much for them either.  if my Aunties Lab gets hold of any bread it causing him to have fits.

Stick to your normal dog food that you are happy with.

My Dalmatian breaks out in rashes at the sniff of bread...Sadly he loves the taste. He will steal some at any given oppotunity, even from the ducks....

IMO butter is a definate NO..

The puppy feeding sheet for Abby for her breakfast said, "toast optional."  :-)   Her breeder kept litters in the kitchen and I don't think she could resist sharing her breakfast with puppies.  Very sweet, however, very unnecessary ... as even her breeder recognized.

As long as your dog has no problem with wheat there really is no harm in giving a small piece of toast to a dog, but in terms of nutrional value it's not much use.  So for a young puppy if the toast keeps them from eating their regular meal, I would give it a miss.

... when I got my other dog (he was 1-1/2) the morning meal his breeder fed him was 1/2 a wheatabix in milk.  So I guess it is pretty common and not far off from Terrier meal and other products sold as "mixers" for dogs.  Except the cows milk, of course, which many dogs do not tolerate well.

Thanks all!!  I personally don't do bread OR butter (wheat and dairy intollerant!) so am quite happy not to give it to pup - who seems perfectly happy with his own food, lol.

Doesnt sound a good thing to feed. Would aviod that. I use things like chees, sausages or sardines as treats.

my breeder fed fred on weetabix and milk in the morning and it really upset his tummy. When i took him to the vets he said feeding pups weetabix and milk is an outdated wives tale. Pups do not need to be fed it at all and it often does more harm than good
