Trying to find which are good and which are not - everyone you speak to has different opinions!!!!

Do you have a puppy or are you expecting one from a breeder? If it's the latter I think you should speak to the breeder to see what he/she is currently feeding & how the pup is reacting to this food & maybe continue with this if it suits your dog.  If you have a pup - what are you feeding now? how is your dog with this food?

I think you need to give us a bit more info if we are to help, but what you must remember is that every dog is different & what suits one might not another!

I personally favour JWB but you will see others don't!

You have an 11 week boxer puppy I think?

Are you having trouble with the food recommended and fed by the breeder?  Some puppies take a while to get used to eating on their own and definitely do better with a bit of competition.

True, and many dogs have different opinions too.  When I tried to change the protein source, one of mine actually ran away from the food bowl; wouldn't even look at it; and if he had to be in the same room would take a diversion past it - round the perimeter.  What a twit!!

If you really need to change, check with other Boxer owners on here and once you have a shortlist see whether you can get some to try.

Hi all, thanks for the replies.  Yes, hes a Boxer, 12 weeks last Friday.  He was having soaked ProPlan with a little tinned meat when he came to me, and a little goats milk, but he'd only pick at it, then he'd be too busy to want to eat.  I started to give the goats milk seperately and he was fine with that for a few days, although he still only picked, and then again he began to lose interest.  So I separated it all and tried each of the different components on their own, but he only picked at them.  So I bought him some Pedigree Puppy food and his stools were dreadful!  So I bought him some Hills and he sniffed it and walked away, so I bought him Royal Canin, which he will eat if I sit with him.  However, he loves my adult dogs food!!  She has soaked Gusto Mature Light as at almost 11 years she is inclined to put weight on too easily, and over the years she has had bad reactions (sensitive tummy) to a lot of feeds.  So I bought a baking dish that has two sides to it - and I put adult dogs food in the right hand side and puppy's in the left, but if I am not supervising puppy he'll still ignore his and eat hers!!  I have fed them side by side in seperate bowls, but he'll still leave his and eat hers, and I have fed them completely seperately - different times different rooms, and he picks then loses interest very quickly.  I have mixed different gravies in it, ordinary milk, chicken, fish and even rice pudding, I've bought him tinned food, but he'll eat them for a couple of meals then lose interest.  Obviously I can't feed him adult dogs 'diet' food and I can't feed my older dog puppy food.  I gave the bags of Pedigree and Hills and the unused tins to the local animal sanctuary.

He's growing and gaining weight nicely - is now 7kg so he is gaining at just under a kg a week (was about 3kg when I had him at 7 weeks).  He doesn't get treats as such, but I give him half a Royal Canin kibble biscuit as a reward for going out to the loo, and sitting to have his collar/lead put on and taken off (RC kibble is smaller than a 5p piece and very thin, so half is incredibly tiny) and sometimes he takes it, puts it on the floor and leaves it there.  He has nothing else.

I'm going to Crufts on Sunday so hopefully I will pick up some tips there, and possibly some samples, but I am loathe to just introduce new feeds willy nilly and keeping changing them.  Getting other Boxer owners to comment is a good idea.  I've never had a fussy Boxer before!!

So, if any Boxer owners want to suggest anything I'd be very open to anything you have to say - and if anyone wants to sell me a sample I'd be happy to pay for it plus p+p of course.

Hi Jacey,

I've owned lots of dogs and never had a fussy eating one until we got our Boxer. He is now ten months old and still has days where he's not interested in his food. He's not food driven when it comes to training although there are certain things he will do for cheese!

When he was smaller I tried all sorts and he'd stick at it for a few days then lose interest. Because he was so skinny I got really worried and turned to the helpful people here. A few suggested tripe so I gave it a go and he couldn't get enough of it. I now feed him a mix of beef, chicken or tripe mince with PAH Wainwrights potato and salmon biscuits and that seems to work.

I tried swapping onto the RMB diet a few weeks ago but he didn't take to it that well and developed Colitis so we're back to mince and biscuits now. He eats all his food as long as I swap it around daily. I think he just gets bored and wants some variety!

Hope that helps
Rosie
