Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Best way to deter a puppy from nibbling?
- By Jacey [gb] Date 03.03.09 11:07 UTC
He'll try to nibble at me (my hand, jumper etc) whilst he's lying with me - what's the best way to deter him?  He does understand the word 'No' but forgets in a few minutes, lol!!  He's 12 weeks old.  I encourage him to swap to one of his toys.

If it's just nibbling then you're doing the right thing by distracting onto toys.  If or when it becomes play biting - i.e. mouthing that's getting painful because of those jaggy needle like teeth (ouch!) then try the steps in this Article specific to puppies being too, erm, 'chewy' :)

It's worth printing off a couple of copies and ensuring all household members and regular visitors follow the same routine.

HTH,
regards Teri

Your very welcome :)

I'm just waiting patiently for the follow up - bite 'prohibition' LOL
(between you and me, my puppy - now 14 months - is still prone to the occasional munch :-D )

My bitch, who is 10.5 years, still likes to hold your finger between her small front teeth and 'feel' you!!  She doesn't bite though, she just gently bounces her teeth on your finger - very funny sensation.

They're all different aren't they!  My pup loves his cuddles and sits upright on my knee like a baby (and he's not a small breed :-p ) but every now and then he decides to have a munch on my arm while he's getting his tummy tickled.  He completely grasped the concept of inhibiting pressure by around 4 months or so but still hasn't got the hang of stopping it entirely :-D

Gotta love them!

Hi Teri

Your pup loves a dance LOL, when he stands up he is a big as me, I am small LOL ! we were dancing the other day with his paws on my shoulders. Hes a gorgeous boy as are the girls . Good luck at the w/e for Crufts.

Hi Irene

LOL, yes, dancing is his all time fave manoeuvre - on lead or off (including in the ring if he can get away with it :-D )  Thanks for the good wishes :)
