Hi , I have 3 samoyeds who were coverd in ticks the other day when we returned from the forrest, they have been treated with frontline but that only kills them within 48 hours it dosent stop them attaching. Is there anything that stops them from attaching, The dogs love it there and i dont want to stop taking them but i cant subject to ticks everytime Tracey
I have found regular use of Advantix much more effective at repelling ticks. Regular frontline use certainly killed them but with Advantix I haven't found ticks on the dog even when walking in tick hot spots such as New Forest, West Coast Scotland etc.
I'm a foot firmly placed in both camps! Use Advantix (as it repels) but Im not always as on the ball with topping up as I should be and so luckily my dogs have garlic as Raw fed. Belt and braces!
Having always had Huskies and always being in forestry I've never had ticks on my dogs :)
Seriously, I have had Newfies for a very long time now! I give them a squirt of garlic paste in their dinner...now I go to the Country Park, take them swimming etc and never ever in my life have they or any of the other dogs had a tick or Flea! I do use frontline on the cats, because they are both prolific hunters so have to keep flea and worm treatment up to date...
I switched to Advantix last year after both my dogs ended up with small ticks right on the bridge of there nose. In one of my dogs the bit came up really angry and took several months to disappear completely.
This thread reminds me its about time I started using the Advantix again; I don't use anything on them during the winter.
Ticks and fleas hate lavender. A few drops on them kills them. I dont know about prevention but would guess it would put them off - likewise citronella. Lavender has the advantage that it can be applied neat - say on a damp cloth before the walk? Try it and let me know
I thought I had read that garlic was bad for dogs and shouldn't be given to them - presumably a small quantity is OK? Could you advise what sort of amount and how you 'dose' the dog - I have a 4 month old flattie, but we live in alovely spot which is, unfortunately, also likely to have ticks.
