Topic Dog Boards / Health / Advice re yearly FULL booster.....!!!!
- By jdp1962 [gb] Date 01.03.09 17:34 UTC
Hi All need your input on this...
phoned my vet about my one year old's yearly booster and was told they now have to have the full course yearly.
When did this come about ! as our previous dog 2 years ago now... was still having part booster yearly and full cover every
3 years.
It's not the cost it's the fact they need the full works each YEAR ! Not to mention the over lap in vaccine given!

What do you do with your dogs....

If you do a google search for the vaccine manufacturer's (it should be on the vaccination certificate) website that will tell you the correct protocol for the vaccine that your Vet has used.

I titre test before any vaccinations(including the puppy ones)the only one I didn't was Wukee as his brother had been titre tested 1st & needed vax & the odds are if one needs vax the whole litter needs vax. I then titre in line with when the vax would be done. Never needed a dog revax'd except for Rjj's Rabies

So none of your dogs have ever needed a booster even for lepto? And have you ever found that a puppy didn't need any vaccinations at all? I find that interesting as several years ago I had a puppy that was seriously ill(she was in  a state of total collapse for about 10 days) a week after her 2nd vaccinations and no cause was ever found by the vets.As I suspect it may have been the vaccinations I haven't had any of my dogs boostered since-they've all had puppy vaccs though although I'm still worried about having them done.

The first annual booster is a full one according the recommended regime.  I don't think this has been changed for some years now.

I did have one BC who never had a vaccination, he was an ISDS farm bred boy & never had any veterinary treatment except at the end of his life, I was told by the lab who did the titre test to vaccinate him would have been to put his life in danger.

I would never give my dogs the lepto booster as it was this that killed my dad's dog within 3 hours of been given it. lepto is the vaccine that causes the most & the worse reactions. It lasts less than a year & does not cover all the servovars) in the UK, so logically dogs should be vax'd more frequently for Lepto

Thanks for your replies ....what you said Isabel makes sense but they are saying every year full cover!
Will phone round local vets and get their take on it.
It's a giving me a real worry as he did react to his jabs when they were done.

Are you sure you have not misunderstood each other?  You will need the full one this time anyway so why not just clarify when you go in.  I would be surprised if this is the case but you will have a whole year to find another vet.
I am not sure what you mean by react.  Most dogs react to some minor degree.  After all if it was having no effect on their system it would not be working!

Reacted badley was prooper poorly for a couple of days( shaking crying and very unhappy with himself) but it subsided
and he was ok again....thank Heavens.
Hes a very well lad don't want to upset equilibrium! know what I mean.

I would not describe that as a severe reaction.  I think they often feel unwell afterwards, I know I have after certain vaccines, and some dogs are more demonstrative where others just withdraw or seem lathargic.

That is what generally happens and why I would not describe it as a severe reaction which is often defined as leaving lasting damage.

I didn't say it was a "severe reaction"; I said he reacted badly, which as far as I am concerned, he did.  I know the difference between a mild reaction and lasting damage.

Appologies.  I was applying my Southern interpretation of "badly".  :-)

No worries :-)

One of my dogs reacted badly when my vet switched to Duramune.  It was only a 24-hour thing but not something I wanted to repeat.  So after discussion with the vet I take my dogs elsewhere for their annual boosters.   I just searched for a vet that used a different brand.

My vet said that many times it is not actually the antibodies (?) in the vacinne that the dog reacts to; sometimes it is just the liquid suspension in the syringe that causes an allergic reaction.

BTW, if your vet switched brands of vacinne they would require a full booster for at least the first year.  if I recall what my vet told me (it was a couple of years ago now), with Duramune the manufacturer recommended two years of full boosters before switching to the semi-booster schedule.

My dogs have their puppy vaccinations and that's all they get.  I am going to get mine titre tested this year and see what happens when I get the results.
However my Akita has just been diagnosed with an immune problem and I have been told to never get her vaccinated again as this could do her more harm than good.

sorry cross posted but seemed relavent here

i know this has been covered before but i spoke to the vet today and he said the vac for lepto has to be done annualy cos its a dead vacinne and the other jabs are only every 3 years? mine always seem to have at least 2 vacs yearly and 3 every 3rd year? is there point in titre testing if you have to go every year for lepto?
