Start again from scratch, I'm afraid. You'll have to pretend he's an 8-week baby, and take him outside at least once every hour and stay with him until he performs outside. Have you trained hm to pee on command? If so, use that cue-word outside instead, and never, ever indoors. Whenever he toilets outside, give him plenty of praise, and ignore the inevitable messes inside. It will take a long time for him to unlearn his training; that peeing inside is now not acceptable.

Puppy mats make life very difficult for both dog and owner, I'm afraid. It's much easier to start the right way - that outside only is for toileting - from the very beginning.

ETA: don't allow him access to the area where the mat used to be. It will still (to him) smell like his toilet area (clean it thoroughly with a biological washing liquid solution then wipe down with surgical spirit or white vinegar to remove any traces of odour) so he will want to use that area even though there is no longer a mat there.

you could try putting the mat outside?

That's a good idea, and might help make the transition easier. :-)

my pup is now 4months old she goes out now 99% i use the pee mates over the last week of her useing it in the living room i moved it closer to the back door so she didnt panic because she couldnt smell it or see it ...so over 1week it was ok and she would remember where it was ...so now she runs to the back door looking for her mate i open the door :) by doing it like this i didnt get stressed and she didnt panic :)

good luck

is she a small breed ?
why have you left it till her being 1 before getting her out ?

xx
ps mine is small breed

Totally agree, What's the point of teaching a pup to pee on a mat?? Just as easy to teach it to go outside.
Just a thought - are pups expected to poo on the mat too?

Hes a yorkshire terrier, because we havent had the time to train him because usually my dad is at home with him throughout the day but he has been work away recently for a one off. So we havent had time to get round to this. We needed some helo on how to start training him to pee outside.

Thanks for your advice x

Put the puppy mat outside the back door, he will go to it. then move it to were you wont him to wee and poo a little at a time then remove it.
The better weather is coming which makes it a little easier, as the back door can be left open a little for him to go to.
Most dogs do not like wee on there feet, they like to wee were it is soaked up. That is why when they are trained to paper or puppy pad, if they can't find it they wee on the mates.
|I have a pup that has been trained to paper from 4 weeks. I then had to put the paper out side, he is now o.k. but! when he goes a walk he still hangs on for a wee until he gets home. He would never dream of pooing on a walk he saves it until he gets home he is 7months now LOL. He has to do it were the others do it. But! he is still a baby, bless

I am using puppy pads with my pup and would thoroughly recommend them.  I am out during the day at work and although I am home at lunch time and my dog walker is in twice a day I feel it is unreasonable to expect a young pup to hold on to their pee and poo.  I would much rather the pup pee'd and poo'd on the absorbant pads than all over my expensive flooring.

It is possible to teach a dog to go outside when possible but use the pads when alone.  My pup asks to go out if I am in but uses the pads if I am not.

so, to answer your question the point of teaching a pup to pee on a mat is that the owner is not always there to open the door.  And yes, pups are expected to poo on the mats too.  Personally I don't see the point of having the dog pee on the absorbant material but poo on the floor.

Becca,
As a few people have said, it may be back to the start. I used pads for a couple of days when my boy first came home, but I used them outside and just really watched for the signs that he needed, also after sleeping, meals, playing etc.

I used a couple of large pebbles on the corners of the pad and once he had peeded, wipes the peebles and ground with pee to scent the area and after a couple of days took the pads away. He always went back to 'his' area and still does - makes it easy to keep clean.
