hiya saoirse, cant say ive noticed him doing that, dosen't seem too bother him its us more its like opening a can of tuna "Sorry" it stinks but then it may be normal again tomorrow.

I would say anal glands too - going off the smell when my boys have thier's emptied which is very much like rotten fish - yuk! I remember when Harvey was a puppy, having him sat on my knee during a football match on TV, everyone went crazy cheering when England scored and it startled him - he emptied his glands a little and it ponged to high heaven - my trousers went in the bin. I would pop him to the vets to have them checked.

I agree it does sound like anal glands , you will notice the smell when he has had a "leak" from his bottom! Some breeds , Pugs for instance are more prone to blocked anal glands , you can't so much see that they're blocked but you can feel them if you know where they are. You will need the vet to show you how to empty them or someone who knows and then it is easy enough to do it at home , best to do it when he's in the bath then you can give the whole area a good wash to get rid of the smell , there's nothing quite like it...lol

My dog has her glands done at the vets quite regular, and it is a very fishy smell.
I would take your dog and have them checked at your vet, as if left can cause other itching and skin problems.
My vet only charges a small fee to do them.
It is best to have them done at the vet, unless you really know how to do them correctly.

Thanks everyone for your great advice as usual will get them checked thanks again!
Ditto Ive had Whistler's emptied but he never scooted on him bum at all. Took him back yesterday all clear so no more antibiotics he is on Garlic & fenugreek now to aid his smellie persona.

Hi todd,
Sometimes dogs release the contents of their anal glands as a fear response - it is not always due to requiring 'hands on' intervention by vet, groomer, owner :) In the latter instance dogs often do 'scoot' their rear end along the carpet etc but not always.
I'm sure your vet will be able to clarify for you.
regards, Teri
