Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Can dogs eat white chocolate?
- By Tricolours [gb] Date 27.02.09 22:28 UTC
I was told they can, but i always thought chocolate was bad for dogs. I was told as white chocolate comes from cocoa butter then it is safe. So what do you all think?

Here is the information that we have on the surgery noticeboard:

This list is the amounts of the various products a 10kg dog would need to ingest to require treatment. Obviously the quantities would extrapolate up or down for different sized dogs.

White chocolate: 22 kg (!!)
Drinking choc powder: 400g
Milk chocolate: 90-134g
Plain/dark chocolate: 2.5-45g
Cocoa powder: 8-38g
Cocoa beans: 5-18g
Cocoa shell mulch: 7-15g

The treatment threshold is 20mg theobromine per kilogram bodyweight.

As you can see, a dog would need to eat twice its own bodyweight of white chocolate before it poisons itself.

Think what springs to mind is why would you need to feed a dog chocolate?

>why would you need to feed a dog chocolate?

I was wondering that - I deserve it more than they do!

Have been thinking about this overnight (yes, I'm that daft ;) )

And have come to the conclusion that I wouldn't feed mine white chocolate in case they decided that they could also scarf the other stuff, being used to the white stuff and all, and it having a similar smell ;)   Just not worth the risk to me.

Have friends who let their dog eat chocolate   he's been fine but not something I'd do, despite having given my dog bits of mars bar in the dim and very distant past ;) but that was before anyone knew of the risk ;)

and as JG said, why ?  I appreciate it much more than they would ;) ;)

when I was a teenager we had an Afghan who was a bit nervy and not keen on people, I used to take him out with me of an evening as I would feel safer walking home with him than walking home alone.  There would be a mixed group of us and everyone wanted to be Khans friend so they would go in the shop and buy him mars bars etc and feed him the whole bar - some nights he would get through 5 or 6 bars  of course it wasnt known about then that it was poisonous.  Khan lived until he was 14 :)  Our other Afghan only liked human chooclate so we used to buy him cadburys buttons instead of doggie chocs, I think he was 15 when we lost him.

disclaimer - not that I would recommend anyone feeding chocolate to dogs, now the risks are known its just not worth it.

Yes, of all the chocolate types 'white chocolate' is the only one that is in actual fact not chocolate!
In some countries it is not allowed to be called 'chocolate'!
("not alot of people know that!")
It contains no chocolate liquor (made from the nibs of the cocao bean) only cocao butter so in essence white chocolate is just blocks of sweetened fat! Mmmmm!?? ;)

I knew it, I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT   I've never, not ever, EVER, EVER liked white chocolate - now I know why   Chocolate free gungey fatty stuff - a bit like a cold lard butty (so I'm told :-D )

No white chocs ever pass these pukka puckers and now they're officially banned from nearing OH and daughter's lips too :-D

My OH left half a bar of choc on the side of the sofa about 6 months ago and my eldest Sheltie got it, she must have chomped, licked and slurped her way through about 4 squares before I discovered her.

I phoned our vet to ask if I should be concerned and they said to take her down straight away with the remains of the choc.
That really made me worried, when we got there she was weighed and they estimated how much she'd eaten from what was left and what OH told me he had eaten, they worked out that for her size and weight she'd had too much and she would need to be made to vomit.
The poor little moo had some solution shoved into her and about 10 mins later lashings of chocolate soup came up :(

I knew chocolate was not good for dogs but the speed with which they reacted when we arrived at the surgery made me think it was more dangerous than I had thought.

OH never had it so bad when we got home

ive seen 2 dogs die from eating chocolate, one a CKCS and the other a labrador, so it can be very serious :(

It's not quite a banned substance in our house now but consumption in doggie areas is met with strong disapproval, the offender is banned to his shed ;)

If only for peace from loud music!!!

Thanks for the info i guess my friend was right. She said she could give white chocolate to her 2 dogs while she ate her milk chocolate so they wouldnt feel left out. All though im trying to persuade her to give them something healthy instead, like fresh carrots my dogs love them.

My Mantra is " No chocolate for dogs and no nuts for children"
This alllows me to eat a full bar of fruit and nut to myself and savour every minute.
Chocolate should only ever be for me :)
