Hi
I have just got back from the vet with my 6 and half year old dobermann and she has diabetes. She has to have 2 injections per day and may need to go on Science plan diabetic dog food. Firstly i was wondering if she would be allowed the odd dog treat during the day i.e. a shape biscuit or two or a tripe stick or would this mess with her insulin.
Secondly does anyone know wether you can get science plan cheaper online and where is the cheapest that you know of. I am sure i will think of other questions later. I did try to listen to the vet but it was such a shock i couldnt take it all in. I am disabled and on income support so its going to be aproblem to manage money wise, the insurance will pay for a while i hope.

sorry to hear about your dobe. what food is she on at the moment? science plan isnt the only food out there suitabke for diabetics, there are several, so wait and weigh things up before starting her on a new food. several of the clients we see feed their diabetic dogs on chappie and they do quite well. the most important thing is to ensure the dog has set regular mealtimes.
the occasional treat as long as it was one or two biscuits should be fine, though i wouldnt do this until she is settled, it can often be weeks before the correct dose of insulin etc is sorted.
good luck

This sounds stupid, but do diabetic dogs have to have a special diet, I know they have there insulin daily, and fed at the same time daily, but dont know if they have to eat certain diets??

there are certain foods which are better than others. some prescription diets use specific carbohydrates which release energy over a longer period of time and at a very regular rate, so keeps metabolism nice and even. some dogs do fine on their own foods, but ive seen some which cannot be stabilised on their normal diets and these dogs may need to be tried on some others to find the best for them.
