Are these good for pain? My dog is holding his leg up and he is grumbling.

To be honest sedatives aren't pain killers ... what they do is prevent the dog moving about to get comfortable.

Do you mean ACP ? If so the answer is no

They will sedate your dog, not help his sore leg.

It could be anything Karen - especially since you didn't notice anything in particular happening.  Have you not got an emergency contact number for a vet?

I'm thinking I may have to do that not certain yet.
He is okay if left alone to rest, but little one keeps bothering him trying to get him to play.

Dogs often go quiet and appear to be settled when in severe pain Karen - by the way you describe his leg I'd be worried of something serious TBH :(   I sincerely hope it's not but surely worth checking just in case

Luckily here the vets are good.
I have just called and spoken to 'the vet' who is a lovely lady who had given him a health check just last week.
She does know him quite well.
He is to rest as he is til morning then see how it goes, if the same she will give him anti inflamatorys, to take for a few days if no better she will have to do a proper examination.
I am happy with this, he is horrid with the vets and always need to be muzzled for them, and as I said she knows him pretty well too. And she favours little terriers (of which he is one).

Will he allow you to examine him?  I guess you've checked for any foreign objects in or between his pads? Are there any hot spots or areas of inflammation or tenderness anywhere from the hip down?  Will he allow you to flex and extend each and everyone of his joints?  If you can isolate the area of concern, it may make things easier for the vet - and less stressful for him!  :-)

Yep I am getting there....He is better that way, otherwise a shocking woosie.
Hips seem fine, second joints ?hocks/knees seem okay too, I have now (or at some point) got to go down to his feet.
He's not licking or bothered by them so feel thats probably not an obvious thing either.  :(
