Hi all
I wonder if anyone can help.
My family and I are looking to buy a Schnauzer puppy (Miniature or Standard) and would like some advice in terms of their endurance...  We have two young boys and so are interested in a Miniature to suit our household but as I do a lot of running I would like the dog to come with me on some of my short runs.  How long would it take to 'tire' out a Miniature.  I'm not looking to bring them with me on a 10 mile+ run but would be nice to take them on a half hour run.  It would only be an easy jog which I'm sure they could keep up with but if I'm going to be carrying them after 10 minutes I think we'll have to look at getting the Standard.
Advice please!!!

Hi
I have a 4 year old min shnauzer and she will just keep going all day. To be far she is happy not going for long walks to but she has endless energy when i have the time to go out for a couple of hours.
don't forget if your getting a puppy that you mustn't over exercise them for the first few months, this can do alot of damage. i would suggest a 15 min walk twice a day to start with but as a tiny puppy playing in the garden may be enough.

the general rule with pups is 5 mins walking for each month so you'd have to start gently. schnauzers are generally pretty fit dogs so i think you'd manage a run with any of the sizes, but i'm sure a schnauzer person will be along soon. a few forum folk have mini's i think.

Thanks for that.  You've answered my only concern with regards to the energy so will start keeping our eyes open for pups.  And don't worry, I know not to push them into anything too early, a) because their bones haven't grown AND b) until I've trained them enough not to stand under my clumsy feet!  I think that may take more than a few months so plenty of time for them to grow!!!  We're also looking to get two - so double the trouble...
Thanks again!

My cocker is a similar size and is happy to do 15 mile walks with my hubby. Of course that's a run on a bit, stop to sniff, type walk, totally different from tireless trotting during a run, which he would not be much good at.....

There is a mini schnauzer who does canix (cross country running with dogs) and that is a usually a 5 - 6K run, it seems to do ok :)

Also I dont know if you are planning to get both pups at the same time but it isnt generally advisable as two are more like triple the trouble as they bond with eachother and are more difficult to train.  You may be better off getting one and then in a year or so when that one is fully trained get another.  There arent many (if any) good breeders who will sell you two pups from the same litter. Your best bet is to google for the breed club and find out about any litters, you should also be able to find out about relevant health tests etc to make sure you get yourself a healthy running partner :)
