ive have a very heated phone call with a so called friend this morning :(
she asked my throughts regarding her new pup haveing a very small hernia ,she said the vet has told her it very small and its not there all the time (pops in and out ) vet says its small bit of fat ?
well shes got this dog to show and breed with ,i knew this before she got her ,but shes asked me ....do you think i can still breed with her ...well i told her NO and she went mad at me and put the phone down ...now im not sure what to say to her regarding the hernia apart from this could be past on to its pups .....
is there anything eles i say to her to put her off ?????......i know she will ring back later when shes calmed down ...thanksx

If it is just a late closure and not something that is a problem in the breed then her Vet is quite right. Pups are attached by the umbilical cord to the placenta this means there is an opening which closes after the cord is severed.
Some cords and their vessels can be quite large, and also some bitches can chew them to close giving a small wound that takes a little longer to close and a Small bit of fat may get caught up while it is closing. This is not a true hernia.

i have THE most fabulous looking bitch which would flounce everything out there at the moment, adding to that she would LOVE to be in the ring but i would never consider breeding from her. hers is quite big, small egg size, but my vet also says its just fat. but her mum has had many pups with this hernia. And depending on how bad it could possibly cost her a fortune not to mention breed a hereditary condition into the breed.
the breed are not known for it but i think it was course by mum (cord chewd to short ).....this is of pea size .
thanku for the link brainless thats very intersting :) .....

I agree with Brainless - some as described are not necessarily hereditary. Perhaps you've jumped the gun?
teri yes i think i may have :( ....i will ring her now and say sorry :) i will show her the link .

Hi again,
you may not have been wrong of course - you're just trying to look out for her interests and hopefully she will understand that :) Those of us more 'dog' addicted tend to hear / learn about things that others don't and so are probably more cautious.
Hopefully everything will be OK with the pup and your relationship too.

my friendship will be fine with her ,i just wanted to understand more about it before she rang me back to say sorry for putting phone down on me :)...

> i have alot to learn and i know i will always be learning something new
I didn't mean you actually LOL - I meant your friend may be less cautious if she hadn't heard of such things whereas you felt it flagged a potential problem and so tried to issue a warning :)
regards, Teri

I have a dog with 9CCs and a hernia. In his 2 litters he has never thrown a hernia. i believe his to be caused by an overzealous bitch and wouldnt give it a second thought.
