hi there, ive just ordered some frozen heart and frozen liver with our order of tripe mince, and wondered do you feed the heart and liver raw or should i cook it,as we feed the tripe raw? when ive bought liver from the supermarket for them they have had it cooked as raw made them loose, but ive never used the freeflow heart and liver before.any advice greatly appreciated.roy.

I have fed mine heart and liver chunks raw with no problems.

Mine have heart and liver raw as a staple part of their diet. However, I do cook and 'dry' some to make training treats for them.

I would prefer to give it to mine raw but they will only eat it if cooked or as livercake, or baked

We always feed the heart raw and have never had any problems with them getting loose. I give it with the tripe, about 3/4 tripe and the other 1/4 heart. I am quite careful with raw liver though as ours have had the squits after a fairly small helping (maybe you need to build up more gradually?) Also one of them won't eat it raw and just leaves it at the bottom of her bowl! I mostly make it into liver cake which is definitely their favourite treat. After much trial and error I now have a fab recipe for liver cake :-)

thanks for the advice everyone ill give the heart raw,and cook the liver i think as i do know liver given raw did make them loose before(and 90kilos of dog with runs is no joke!),i will add a little to their tripe each day until i know they are ok with either.thanks,roy.

Misty, may I have your receipe for liver cake please?

> receipe for liver cake

1lb chopped liver
1lb ground rice
2 beaten eggs
1/2 cup sunflower oil
1tbs chopped parsley (not essential)

Mix liver, eggs, oil & parsley together. Stir in ground rice. Roll into a ball then flatten out into an oiled baking tray.
I bake mine for 20 minutes at 140, but mine's a fan oven and cooks hotter and quicker than a regular oven.
Let it cool for 10 minutes or so then cut into pieces. It needs to be stored in the fridge as it's got no preservatives, but usually keeps for a week. Well it keeps 4 DdB in high value treats for a week anyway :-)

Thanks Misty, sounds delightful, I especially like the addition of chopped parsley - Gordon Ramsey eat your heart out!

Hi Roy!

I have given both raw before.  All ok, but I think a moderate amount.

Can you pm me where you order your tripe / liver etc from?

I use wheatgerm flour and put some garlic in.

I would give it to them raw, see no problems in that, though its rich and too much is not always good for a dogs diet.
I purchased a lot of mixed offal from the butchers who has minced it together. Boy he will not eat it so are cooking it in a new style liver cake.

The one piece of offal he loves is lung - though no butcher will sell this on its own i have found(by chance had some in a large bags of bones from the butcher)
