It depends on whether the glaucoma is caused by a drainage angle fault or is another type of glaucoma. Glaucoma in dogs has two main types.
In flatcoated retrievers we have an official one off test as recommended by the BVA because we have a primary drainage angle closure glaucoma, our breed society have asked us to get our dogs rechecked at 7 to 8 years of age as there may be age related changes. Peter Bedford agreed with this, that there can be age related changes occurring in the eye.
Gonioscopy is really a test to see if your dog has a predisposition to get glaucoma. If you know you have a higher chance of getting glaucoma then you could of course monitor the dog more closely and have a test done every couple of years. The mildest affected dogs might pass under one specialist and fail under another, so I think it pays to keep a watch on this condition.
I certainly test all my dogs for this condition at least every two or three years, regardless of the fact they do not display a predispostion to glaucoma.
The Kennel Club have experts available so that breeders and owners to ask such questions at Crufts as well. I know the BVA usually share the big stand with the Kennel Club and they have various leaflets and booklets explaining all the health schemes these are free! They also have a daily set programme of lectures with question and answer sessions afterwards.
