My friend bought a lil frenchie not long agao- think she got her at like 9 weeks she is about 3 months now or so- anyhow she feeds her and she seems to puke shortly after plus has the poo's. She asked her breeder about this and she said that she did that there to and she had to put her on Iams then she was fine- I found this weird and thought if you have a puppy with problems would you not make sure all is well before you sell her. My friend was feeding her Nutro and well she's puking- still seems lively and still likes her food. She said that she was told that the reason is because she free feeds her, but I said if that was a problem she would eat all that is down and not leave the bowl which she eats some and carries on with her business she does not gorge herself at all... I gave her 5 cups of Orijen and 4 cups of Go and told her to give her 1/2cup of Orijen 3 times a day and nothing else and see how she does. Also she was dewormed (gave 2 pills to give so many weeks apart) at the vet (same vet I go to) and on the second vet visit (different vet) the vet dewormed her again- I thought that was weird why deworm again unless you suspect she needs it and if that was a case wouldn't you just ask for a stool sample to see if its worth deworming again? I gave her about 3 handfulls of Orijen yesterday and she seemed fine on it never puked with in the 4 hrs at all I was there so I told her to not mix it with the other food just to do a full switch and if all is good then switch her onto that food- she should have enough food to last a couple of days to see if it does a difference... When she puked it was like mushy kinda looked like poo in it but no she has not eaten any poo- so I really have no idea.

Does anyone have any idea's?

Hi dollface

> Does anyone have any idea's?

In this instance I'd hope the vet would be more pro-active about possible causes if the vomit looks suspiciously like anything other than digested or partly digested kibble and to set your friend's mind at rest there is no possible infection brewing or potential blockage.

That having been addressed and hopefully given the all clear, then it may be food related - i.e. the puppy possibly being intolerant to one or more ingredients in the diets it's getting.  If OK on Origen then I'd immediately switch to that alone - no gradual change over necessary if intolerance is the likely suspect.  If the tummy is upset before the switch then I'd fast pup for up to 12 hours and then reintroduce small regular meals of Origen.

FWIW I think the free-feeding could cause other problems in that since pups are likely to pick up anything and everything no matter how smelly, rank, inappropriate or downright unsafe, then I like to know (a) how much food is going in per meal and (b) if they're chewing when they shouldn't be do I need to hold my nose and retrieve the potential rank thing from it's mouth

Some dogs are not suited to dry food yet others can be fine after a long rest of the digestive system.

Try feeding a wet food preferably home cooked e.g.: chicken and rice for over a two week period (feed three or four times a day) Give daily probiotic to help give a normal digestive function. Do not give any treats in this time.

After two weeks slowly add the pet food of your choice over a two week period. If the dog starts vomiting undigested food again then go back to step one feeding e.g.: chicken and rice for two weeks then slowly introduce a wet dog food. If all is fine I would only feed only three or four times a day this way the owner will not be over feeding.

She has decided to put her on the Nutral Natural Choice lamb n' rice and since her poo is normal and no more vomiting- "fingers crossed" so far so good- I did tell her she can keep that food I gave her (orijen and Go) and use it as treats for when she takes her out to do her business and to avoid doggy treats all together atleast until she is doing good for awhile. Free feeding she is still doing and she does not seem to be gorging herself, just eats a bit and off she goes again.
Am hoping all is well and keeping fingers crossed for her- she is such a lil cutie :-)
