Topic Dog Boards / Health / Spay problems 4 months after op!

Has anyone ever had a bitch with problems 4 months after the spay op?

My bitch had her op in October and had an infection and haematoma which the vet felt was due to the inner sutures.  She had antibiotics which helped and had her stitches out 14 days later.  The wound immediately peeled open so she had staples which stayed in for another 2 weeks.  Finally, all healed up fine until yesterday.  She has licked her tummy raw and a hole has opened up, about the size of the old halfpence.

The vet wants to put her out on Friday and removed any remaining sutures and give the area a thorough clean.

Any similar experiences?

We had our bitch spayed in November.  She devloped an infection but antibiotics got rid of it.  We were told that a collar was unnecessary and occasional licking wouldn't be a problem.  Clearly it was though and a collar would have prevented it and antibiotics straight after the op would have been better too.  Maybe you could suggest a collar for your pup after she has had her new stitches together with antibiotics for possible infection.  Good luck.

Hi Debussy

Thanks for your reply.  She did have a collar after her op so licking did not cause the problem, one of the reasons the vet felt it was a reaction to the inner sutures.  None of mine have had probs after spaying before and to have a recurrence 4 months later is very unusual.  She will also be having a collar after her op tommorow.  There's obviously something going on inside her and this is what worries me.

Also she has been put on a 5 day course of antibiotics at the mo.
