Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Another doglet chewing like mad

That is my Isla,  sheltie of 8 months.  Despite having long walks every day and 2 companions to torment LOL she continues to chew everything in sight that she shouldn't.  She has had a go at several rugs, curtains,  bed covers,  destroyed a pair of my short boots (my fault should have put them away).  The worst was a rug we only bought a few days ago, quite expensive at John Lewis.  I thought she was just lying on it until I discovered that her pointy muzzle was sunk into it.  Fortunately I got to her before she had done much but now I am nervous of letting her out of my sight.  I have been to Pets at Home today and bought an anti chewing spray.  I am not at all a particularly house proud person but all these things cost money and she has to learn not to do it!!

I have never encountered such a lot of chewing before in any of my dogs - but it is quite hard work as I don't like keep shutting her in the kitchen when the other 2 dogs  have the run of the house. She does have a crate but I usually only put her in it to eat her meals so that the other two don't steal her grub.  She objects to being in it apart from that! She has loads of chews and things which she does chew but has a habit of sneaking off and getting stuck into much more interesting things ......

Any ideas??

Hi Harriette

perhaps give her nothing to chew while you're around and then toys and treats like a stuffed kong will have more interest when she's left unattended or you're busy elsewhere :)

She's still of an age where chewing is pretty much inevitable so you just have to minimise any opportunity for her to go on a search and destroy mission :-D  (easier said than done of course)  My own youngster is still occasionally caught red pawed / jawed with something he shouldn't and even seems to absent mindedly chew my slippers while I'm wearing them LOL

On the plus side they do grow out of it eventually - in the meantime you need to be very tidy, very observant and very consistent about keeping inappropriate things out of her reach.

HTH Teri :)

Hi Snowflake

My two Shelties only a month or so older than your Isla are also chewing experts. I do remove as many chewable toys as possible when we're about and then supply stuffed kongs, balls bones you name it when we're not about. Doesn't seem to make a lot of difference though.

My Isla has even eaten the edge of her plastic bed and is now on her second. She is the worst of the two. :(
I have resigned myself to waiting until they grow out of it and we will not bother replacing the door frame to the cupboard under the stairs or putting new skirting board in the kitchen until they are older and the exposed brick work on the chimney breast is just going to have to stay as it is   :-o
