hi i breed lhasa apsos but my parner wants to buy a shar pei has anyone got a shar pei that knows more about them as you look on the net and all you get is contradictions, some say they are not good with kids, and i have 4 kids age range from 5 to 14 ,some say they get on with other dogs others say it depends on the coat type well im confused about the whole thing i thought the best thing to do was to ask people who own them thankyou

I have had 3 Shar Pei (all male) and they have all been different really.  My current one is fantastic with my children - although he prefers to keep himself out of their way (my kids are 11 months and 3).  I wouldn't say any of mine have been the kind of dog that kids can really roll about with but on the plus side he is never snappy, never minds them stealing all his toys, is not food possesive, bed possesive or toy possessive. He is also amazing at never treading on them or bumping into them.  He is also protective of them and when he was running about in the woods recently and lost sight of my daugher (she had been walking and then my husband put her on his shoulders) he went into panic mode thinking she had been left behind and went racing off to find her - when he realised she was with us soon he came back and calmed down!

Out of my 3 only 1 has loved other dogs really - they have all been well socialised but I don't believe them to be doggy dogs.  My current boy has a particular dislike to dogs around his size - he is pretty dominant with other dogs but he will come away from them when we call him back.  He is fantastic off the lead but neither of our others could ever be let off and most people do not allow Shar Pei to be off lead. You will never find a cleaner dog either - they tend to avoid all dirt and practically house train themselves.  They are also very devoted to their family but never needy or in your face kind of dogs.

All ours have been brush coats so I don;t have experience of horse coats but I can say I suffer from a lot of allergies and Shar Pei have never irritated me.  On the negative side we have found all to suffer from ear infections but after finding Thornit we are now able to keep infections to a minumum.

If you need any further info then please get in touch.

Kind regards

Nicola
