Hello, I was just wondering if any of your dogs behaviour changes in the snow ?
I have a wonderful 4 yr old male GR - he is so well behaved, off the lead his recall is great, loves to meet and greet other dogs and walks on. We go to the same park every day but do different walks
However, our walk in the park today which was covered in a nice thick layer of crisp snow (it is not the first time he has seen snow either) - he was like a naughty child :o) he ran off wouldn't come back, played stanced with every dog and wouldn't leave them be, overall he just wouldn't listen to me :o( at one point he has his nose firmly stuck in a pile of snow, I called and called he didn't even look up, in the end I put him on his lead and come home.
Anybody else experience this ?
Thanks Kirsty and Kez

Yes the "white powder" makes my dogs go mad ;-)

Glad it is not just Kez phew :o)

My first Spanish were like young children when they saw their first snow, this latter lot are so mental they didn't even notice, especially my youngest. I was so excited when I saw that Manchester had "real" snow that I excitedly let them out waiting to see their reaction and there was nothing! :)
Mine go mental when it snows , recall whats that , rolling and making snow angels and generally throwing themselves around.

Mine are the same, constantly wanting to go out to play and then you can't get them in again. They are just like little children :)

My GR loves the snow and acts the loon when out walking in it. He gets a huge attack of the zoomies and then throws himself to the ground and rolls in the drifts. He must get snow in his ears as his normal great recall can take a while to happen in the snow :-) unless I am throwing snowballs for him.

yes- both of mine went berzerka- running in figures of 8 and mad running and rolling in the park! they loved it- similar to behaviour at the beach in summer, i suppose its just a novelty

Yes it does on a walk, but not in the garden.
OUt on his walk he'll walk great on the path, but when we get to the field & I let him out on his long line he's darting every where at full speed as if to take in all the scents on the ground as fast as possible (he usually plods along, slowly sniffing). He's much the same when there has been a hard frost, so it's not the actual snow itself. The snow/hard frost must make all the new scents stand out from the old, like a shiny new magazine LOL
George + snow = BONKERS :-)

I love to see Kez in crazy mode,he runs and runs and runs - he becomes so intense with his nose to the floor sniffing, he loves to catch snow balls and loves to roll on his back. He is like a puppy all over again. Like you Harley maybe he gets snow in his ears and clocks a deaf one LOL :o)

Snow madness gets mine too and a windy day blowing around their skirts.
My GR always has a grass bath every morning no matter what the weather, sunny dewy rainy frosty or snowy and when she's rolling around snorting and snuffling all of the other girls see this as a good opportunity to dive bomb her and knicker and leg bite.
My BC and Sheltie pups eat snow and the GR moots it (sticks her nose in it and blows out making honking trumpet sounds)
I must look a right nit filming it in the early hours ;)

Yep my gsd went mad this week, recall atrocious ! digging ,shovelling with his nose I lost count of how many times he went into the garden tearing about in circles.. Now littlepomchi she took one step outside nearly disappeared and ran back in, eventually I had to tread a track for her to go out and do a wee .
It was lovely to watch my big boy.
I took my boy for a walk yesterday and he was crazy! This is his first proper snow and he absolutely loves it.
On the way to the field he was pulling on the lead, tail up and wagging like crazy. He kept looking back at me as if to say "Hurry up mum, I want to run in the SNOW!"
Then all the way home he was jumping up at me to try and grab the ball from the chuckit

not like him! But it's great to see him so happy. As long as it doesn't become habit I'll let him off ;)
I'm sure it must stir up some ancestral memories of Canadian winters.

Our 4 year old GR was loopy as well running around playing with the other dogs. The funniest thing is watching her chasing snow balls, she gets really confused when she picks them up and they disappear!
Oh yes, my dog was like that :-)

That have exhausted themselves playing. The cat was having almost as much fun.
The kids (grown up 20's) were as mad... and OH not me though far too sensible.... I made all the warehouse men come out for a snowball fight...
Just come back from a lovely walk to the field, which is about 4 inches deep in snow. The dog walkers have come out in force and we had a large group of dogs playing happily together - was such a lovely sight to see :) they had a whale of a time. My 11 year old was like a puppy again, rolling around in the snow! Silly girl!

We have about 8-10 inches here and the dogs have gone MENTAL! first the oldest one stands watching through the window as the flakes fall and getting all excited. Then when they went into our tiny garden they spent the whole time running like lunatics. When we go out they try to run in 5 directions at once, leaping about and doing the zoomies LOL then when we get back they spend all their time asking to go back out LOL They don't care about the snow bobbles at all LOL
I still have fond memories of my 15 year old Pembroke Corgi standing in line to take his turn sliding on his belly with us kids in the 70's :) we'd found a lovely long slope and about 10 of us + dog were using it to slide down :-D

Are any of you noticing an effect we see every year with the first snow? Puppyboy is completely house trained and knows to use the backyard for bathroom duties. The first snow confuses him. There is snow on the ground he toilets on and there is snow on deck. Therefore, the deck must now be acceptable for toiletting. A few times accompanying him out and shushing him off the deck gets the message across. We had to do this with the last two dogs as well.
As for the other changes in behaviour, no. Oban was born Oct. 15, 2008 and his first months knew nothing but deep snow. He probably thinks snow is how things should be.

My dogs are true Canadians - they HATE the snow! When there is snow on the ground (which starts about November and goes until April ish) they give the look of death whenever I send them outside! And if I forget to shovel the yard (thinking oh this is just a dusting) they stand on the porch, refuse to get off, and whine at the door.

The snow was pretty deep here with me and the first real snow the girls had seen, even though Pepsi is 7 now!!
They went nuts in it, running rolling biting it and jumpin in it. Merlot tried to catch the flakes and could not work out were they went when she did!!
They usually are ploddy on walks but they all became greyhounds in the snow!!!

My older boy who 6 in May has been acting like a pup all week.
Running around the garden jumping about and genellay acting the fool.
So funny to watch them all playing in the snow ive taken loads of pictures this last week.
hi, my pup border terrier really loves the snow except it is has deep as he is tall, we have swept or dug the patio, and a patch of grass and keep a eye on him but he loves it, have to chase him around garden to get in he bounces like tigger in the snow, boston wont go out with out gentle persursion then straight back in watching pup barking from door way, i think he thinks he is off his rocker, have put bostons coat on to go out in garden stayed out all of 2 mins to do business then straight back in had to rope kids in to catch pup as he is like a rocket tigger.LOL

Staffordshire Bull Terrier and snow is a combination made to send unsuspecting owners such as myself over the edge however I get my own back and lob snowballs at her.................................:) serioously she adores the snow but her mind is totaly fixated on the snow........................she adores it, and its a joy to behold, she even came in handy today pulling the sled of my youngest nephew and niece back up the hill

I lost a squatty Sheltie in the garden earlier on this evening, she's quite a diddy one and blue merle, good colour to lose in snow and moon light. The silly thing went snuffling in to a drift up the garden and after calling and torch waving she appeared looking like a giant (well big for a Sheltie) snow ball :) She now has another pet name, instead of Flumpin Baby Sausage she's Flumpin Baby Snowball. :)
Snow is to dogs as sand is to horses!
That's so true.. some magic energy dust me thinks!!!!!!!
And to answer thew question...yes mine go bonkers
