Topic Other Boards / Foo / Low energy spot lights?

I hope somebody here will be able to advise!
I have just received our electricity bill and it is very high compared to what we were paying in our old house!
On our lounge we have 8 x spotlights that use MR16 mains GU10 Halogen 240v, 50w (I hope this will mean something to somebody clever :)!)
Now I have seen these LED lights that use loads less energy but I'm so confused what is it that we should be looking at to replace these energy eating halogen bulbs!
There seems to be so many different strenghts etc there...
Any electricians on board or somebody who has changed theirs and could maybe advise?

2 of our spotlights in the kitchen blew recently so OH bought the low energy LED ones to try to see what the difference is.  The light they give off is very white and actually looks blue where they shine down on the white floor tiles (even though the floor tiles are very rarely white...the Newfie makes sure of that *rolleyes*).  I don't think I'd want my whole room lit with them and I imagine it would be even worse in a living room.

Apart from that, I have no idea if there are any other differences.

Hi, I don't know about the LED bulbs as I think they are only equal to really low wattage bulbs. A 9w low energy GU10 bulb is the same as a normal 50w GU10 bulb. Take a look at  http://www.energybulbs.co.uk/  - they seem to be the most competative place price wise.

Thanks both!
I did read the light is blue tinted and did think it would look quite cold in the living room.
But then I was not sure how blue if that makes sense (we have very warm pinkish walls so I though they would be ok) but maybe not if the light is very blue so thanks for pointing that out.
I will have a look at the low energy bulbs, that might be just what we need...
I have energy saving bulbs everywhere else in the house but for some reason I thought there isn't one for the spot lights until I started looking- after paying nearly £50 a month electricity!
That is soo much more than our bills in the old house and too much if you ask me!
We have not got anything else different than a different fridge and these lights so I point my finger to the lights!
