Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Fussy feeder!

Young female GSD.  Hyper-fussy over food.  Tried Arden Grange, Royal Canin, Eukanuba and tried mixing them with frozen tripe/chicken/rabbit/lamb etc.  She picks out all the meat and spits out any biscuit!!!

She loves Bonios!

So I guess my question is;

Is there such a thing as a complete-meat diet out there which would suit her better?  She will happily eat a tin of Butcher's tripe on its own but I can't help but feel this isn't a suitable diet......?

I've alternated between pandering to her whims or making her go hungry but she loses weight quickly and with the cold weather I haven't got the heart to see her going hungry for too long!

Anyone got any recommendations please?

Tinned Chappie is supposed to be a complete food. Certainly worth trying - most dogs do well on it.

How about going Rwa look up Raw Meaty Bones website for more advice. I have my 2 dogs on it from pups and doing great I do add fish, the odd egg and at times puree veg although RMB dont believe this is necessary.
I have also heard that tinned chappie can be used on its own and dogs do well on it.

I have 2 toy poodles Rusty aged 4 and Pepe aged 2 and a half. My older dog is the fussy eater and having tried Nature Diet Natures Harvest and also dried foods settled on Natures Menu in Pouches which he ate with a bit of encouragement. I then found that I wasn't able to get the pouches due to the company who packaged it went into liquidation, but I then discovered Natures Menu in tins more expensive at £1.19 a tin, to my surprise Rusty seemed to much prefer this and usually eats it quite happily. I can only think that as consistency is a bit different to the pouches this is the reason he likes them better plus 2 of the varieties have potato in instead of rice. The only one he wasn't as keen on was the salmon and chicken with rice but as there are 3 other flavours it doesn"t matter. I have to say that Pepe the younger dog is not as fussy and has been finishing up the packets of Natures Harvest I had bought. They both have the Natures Menu tins now plus Royal Canin mini sensible(for fussy eaters) in their kongs to eat if they want it.

A friend of mine puts whole garlic cloves in with her dried food - she doesn't feed them to the dogs but says her boys cannot resist any food scented/flavoured in this way.  Might be worth a try if you still have dry complete foods left.

Have you coated the biscuit with anything?  My fussy boy used to get his complete food coated with a couple of spoons of dog food in gravy.  The Tesco one was great as it looked like stew.  I used to mash the meaty chunks so he couldn't pick it out and make sure I completely coated the biscuit.  It worked

Good luck

PS isn't it a shame you can't get complete food in bonio bone sized pieces?  Mine would have eaten these without trouble too - and they'd make easy portions when travelling :)

I get my tins from Bearsden pet supplies as I live in west sussex they also sell it at Pets Corner failing that Berriewoods on the internet or natures menu web site. If none of these available maybe a local pet shop may be able to order it in for you. I did ask my local pets at home but they said they could only order items they have listed. My 2 poodles weigh around 5 kg each so they share 1 tin per day between them split into 2 meals morning and evening they also have a bit of royal canin mini sensible in 2 kongs which they sometimes eat depending how hungry they are. The tins available are all for adult dogs i think although it doesn"t state an age on the tin. The choices are chicken, beef and chicken both with potatoes peas and carrots and lamb and chicken or salmon and chicken these have rice instead of potatoes. There does not appear to be one specifically for puppies. Hope this helps.

Jeangenie,
Goodness I havn't heard of that for years! It has fish in it doesn't it? Years and Years ago I feed one of my dogs on that it was the only tinned meat it would eat.

Fleabag(great name btw),

I too are on the raw meaty bones diet, my boy was greatly fussy from day one of having him. We carried on with RC which the breeder had him on, that went out the window, as did Nutro and AG. I decided to bite the bullet and we are now on the raw and he is doing so well and eating at least 1 meal a day. He has days where he will turn his nose up at it, but he will go back and eat later in the day.
I have noticed he is fitter and a great shiny coat as well. His teeth are so clean and often people ask how i do it, i tell them and they looked shocked.

Also the poo's are harder and easier to pick up, he doesn't get the runs from being on raw.. I love it.

Thanks all :-)

I've bought some tins of Chappie (original), a couple of packets of Forthglade meat and a small bag of Autarky (puppy food)

She has loved it all and I've never seen such a clean bowl!

Long may it last!

Me too, and more importantly so do my Dogues. Wish I'd done it years ago.
