Despite having known about this for a couple of weeks, it didn't hit me until today when I read the article in Dog World. The BBC did not want to show Crufts on TV unless the KC banned 14 breeds from the group competition. One of those breeds was the St Bernard. Yet the BBC have just signed up a new dog to take part in EastEnders, a dog that is a SHOW DOG, will be shown going to shows, and is a St Bernard! Where is the sense in this? It's okay in EastEnders but not at Crufts? Maybe we should all e-mail them and ask? I know I will.

Well you know what will happen - everyone will want one.
Also, not showing the Gazza appeal because they wanted to remain impartial? Now that was hypocritical.
And did you notice that the pekignese was the first to have its breed standard altered!! With them focusing on Danny the peke, I think its abit sickening as it all caused by that programme and whats wrong with the Bernies??
Does anyone know the 14 breeds they did want to ban??

thats just ridiculous! there is a basset hound in eastenders it belongs to the beales!

And don't forget the rottweiler! The BBC did a lot of backpeddling after that one saying it was put on by mistake.

My email to the BBC
>On the 12th December 2008 the BBC reported on its news page that it would not be broadcasting Crufts due to a dispute with the Kennel Club believed to centre over a list of 12 breeds which the BBC did not wish to appear in the Best in Show ring. This list included the St Bernard. It has since anounced that a St Bernard will now be appearing in Eastenders possibly several times a week. This dog is from a breeder of Champion dogs and could quite possibly have been one of the dogs appearing in the main ring at Crufts. Can the BBC explain this apparent hypocrisy?
I wish I had not spelt announced wrong though :-)

does anyone have these breeds and know what they are trying to change?

Good email Isabel! Its is very hypocritical of the BBC...thinking about it, EastEnders has always had pedigree dogs on it...(although Well'ard was supposedly found as a stray, there aren't too many stray Tervs in my area!), Willy the Pug, Roly the Standard Poodle, Terence the Lhasa to name but a few! And I'm quite sure these dogs were all from good breeders too!

Mahonc they are listed further up the thread :-)

yeh sorry alice i meant what about the breed they are trying to change. there are breeds on there that i was not aware had problems with the breed standard

The BBC are not effecting these changes the KC are, Mahonc. You will find details
here. As far as I can see the BBCs only possible gripe is the speed at which the KC have worked on it.

Nice to see they want bordeauxs out before they have even been in crufts and i see the majority are our breeds. Perhaps we should make a dog show of our own and they can get stuffed.
For a critical outside view (with experience) whats wrong with my breed?

Do send yours. The more that do the bigger the impact and the less they will think I am just a silly old bat ;-). You can do it very easily

You will find the changes the KC have felt appropriate
here, Louise. You sound quite oblivious to this

Has your club not had much to say on the matter?
Yeh i read it but thought it was just changing the way it looked, as i dont see any health problems in the breed because of the way they look, am i being blind??

answer deleted.
I would not say anymore, Louise. This board is watched and what a breeder may say in defence of her breed may be taken down and used in evidence against it ;-)
Well ive owned 3 now 2 and didnt see any health problems because of the way they look. None have breathing issues as they all have good open nostrils and moderately short muzzles, but i suppose its for examples that are not like mine that have tight noses and excessively short muzzles??

Louise,, I would suggest you go and read up on what has been discussed about all of these breeds, especially your own (I am surprised that you have not already done this, since our breed clubs are making us very aware of changes required).. and take Isabels very good advice.. seriously.. refrain from making off the cuff comments..
You are being watched,

im going to be really thick but what is wrong with louise's comments/ questions?

I've sent mine as well -great, the BBC will be bombarded, and it is such a valid point, I'd love to know how they're defending themselves here. I e-mailed Dog World as well.

Done & sent be interesting to see what replies if any we get
It would be good to bombard local radio stations and see if it can be brought up as a topic for discussion. Even if BBC stations won't touch it I'm sure plenty of commercial stations will.

I've emailed the BBC too :-)

I emailed them a while ago as I knew about this when they first said they weren't going to televise crufts. I got a rubbish standard email back. I can't believe that the BBC feel that they can control Crufts and the KC like this, the sheer cheek of it!!!

I have sent an e-mail to them at the beeb Isabelle.
I think some of the breeds mentioned need a carefull overhaul, have to say at the risk of being slated here that one of the worst IMO is the Neopolitan I just hate all that loose skin and most of the ones I see at shows have sore spots on hocks and elbows. The seem unable to move with any fluidity and although I confess to knowing little about the breed they do nothing for me at all and as a JP I think they must suffer.
Tin hat someone please?
Aileen
Was watching cbbc with my daughter a few days ago & the director general was on newsround explaining why the BBC couldn't really report on something or other as they had to be seen to be impartial/ unbiased & not in favour of any one opinion. Nearly choked on my cornflakes.

LOL yes, what a joke!
I have mailed them too, 10 days to wait for the same standard rubbish e mail that 100's of others have probably received! Come back with your replies everyone, we'll see what they say!

Thank you for that - emailing now!
Was telling OH he thought they were being outrageous - and must admit couldn't believe it when the 'owner' said he is a champion show dog!!! BBC!!!!
He was a lovely boy though :)

Done.
and must admit couldn't believe it when the 'owner' said he is a champion show dog!!! BBC!!!!And as an aside, now Joe Public will think you win money at dog shows. "He's a show dog so you could earn a few bobs by showing him." Er, yeah, it usually costs a fortune to show regularly, nothing but expenses!!

Just wait all shows will be corrupt and JP will believe another warped view of dog showing and pedigree dogs.

Ermmm...yeah and your point is???? ;-)

I think the point is that the appeal for Gaza is FOR the Palestinians, which is why they won't broadcast it...

Sorry Isabel, I didn't mean to offend or hi-jack!

Aaah... I got confused because I thought you were talking about Paul Gascoigne, but I am with you now. (PS - it's Gaza :-) ).

:-D No, that's all right :-P but I still don't understand the Gaza or Gazza bit.

Someone called the BBC hypocritical because they refused to show an appeal on behalf of Gaza(Palestine) but the reason they wouldn't show it was because it was for the PALESTINIAN side and they didn't want to appear to take sides against the Israelies...got it? Maybe they could have shown an appeal for BOTH sides? ;-)

Ah right, missed that. I was in such a blind hurry to get my email off.

Think you'll find I SMELT it right!!!! ;-) :-) Thank goodness for edit function!!!

Oi!!!! You trying to make me look a numpty hun? :-D

MOI?? Never! ;-)

Lol! Sorry my bad with regards spelling I think :-) Sorry I thought the Gaza appeal was because Israel blew up the UN supplies or something like that.
But yes, I like the emails people are sending. Very good point about the fact that the dog in question had a chance of being one of the dogs that wouldn't be televised if the Beeb got their way with the Crufts coverage.

Yes, think the Gazza appeal was for the Children, who cares if they are palastinian or israelie!

'Gazza' is Paul Gascoigne's nickname. 'Gaza' is an area of the Middle East in turmoil. ;-)

Sent. :-)

Yes did know this, must've had a twitch on 'z' lol
I thought the best bit was when the bloke said he will make lots of money from showing the dog :) Perhaps I should show him my credit card bill. If only!!!!!!!!!!!!
