- By LHANKEY [gb] Date 14.01.09 12:31 UTC
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT I CAN TRY NEXT. MY 21 MONTH GOLDEN RETRIEVER DOG HAS A SKIN PROBLEM THAT CAME THIS TIME LAST YEAR IT HAS RETURNED THE SAME TIME THIS YEAR BUT WORSE.IT IS ON THE UNDER PART OF HIS BELL/BACK LEGS AND BOTTOM AREA AND IS SO SORE AND ITCHY THAT HE IS LICKING AND PULLING HIS FUR OUT.I TOOK HIM TO THE VETS LAST YEAR BUT THEY SAID IT WAS PUUPY DERMATITIS,I THINK THIS ISN'T THE CASE AS HE ONLY GETS IT THIS TIME OF YEAR FOR AROUND 2 MONTHS. I'VE TRIED MEDICATED SHAMPOOS,CREAMS,GARLIC TABLETS,CHANGED HIS DIET EVERYTHING.IF ANYONE KNOWS OF ANYTHING THAT MIGHT HELP I WOULD REALLY APPRIECIATE IT.THANKS

This should help as its non allergenic it will take a while for his stomach to settle down and his skin but it should be ok, if not try wainwrights its abit cheaper but the same non allergenic stuff.

THANKS FOR REPLYING I THOUGHT IT MAY TAKE A WHILE TO WORK, JUST CHECKED HIM OVER THOUGH AND ALTHOUGH HE'S ONLY BEEN ON IT FOR 4 DAYS THE REDNESS AS GONE LIGHTER TO A PINKY SO FINGERS CROSSED IT MAY BE WORKING.THANKS

If he only gets this for 2 months of the year, it not likely to be the food he eats every day that triggers it (or he would have it all the time).
It could be a hot spot, which if aren't treated quickly, will spread, the dog chewing at it can break the skin, leaving it open to a secondary infection.
Just a thought, have you treated your home for fleas recently? The flea population can bloom with the heating on this time of year, a dog nibbling at a flea bite could trigger a hot spot. A flea- allergy can cause this type of itching too.
But, there are many possible causes, best for a vet to diagnose.

THANKS FOR REPLING, HE GETS WORMED AND FLEE TREATED REGUALLY BUT WE'VE NOT LONG MOVED HOUSE AND IT WAS JUST STARTING AS WE MOVED BUT HAS GOT WORSE, AS FOR HOT SPOT THIS MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT AS WE HAVE BEEN OVERDOING IT WITH THE CENTRAL HEATING LATELY AND SOMEONE MENTIONED THIS COULD BE THE CAUSE WITH HIM ONLY HAVING IT FOR 2 MONTHS OF THE YEAR WHEN WE HAVE REALLY COLD WEATHER.HOWEVER I WAS ADVISED THE OTHER DAY TO CHANGE HIS FOOD TO JAMES WELLBELOVED HE'S ONLY BEEN ON IT FOR 4 DAYS AND JUST CHECKING HIM OVER THE REDNESS AS CALMED DOWN TO A PINKY SO THIS MAY WELL BE WORKING FINGERS CROSSED.

In addition to all the other possibilities already mentioned, your dog might also have environmental allergies to a grass/pollen/etc that pops up around this time of the year! In that case, antihistamines should do the trick... check with your vet though before giving him anything.
