Topic Other Boards / Foo / legal age for full time school - has the law changed?
- By MADDOG [gb] Date 09.01.09 12:01 UTC
Bit long winded so bear with me

September 08 my ds started school.  He's 5 at the end of May 09.  He did two weeks of half days then they said he could go full time if we wanted.  He wanted to but I still took him out on a Friday pm for a swimming lesson with his buddies from pre-school that had gone off to another village school.  Today I went in & said I'd pick him up at lunchtime as usual & his teacher looked at me in horror & said "you can't".  She then decided that it was probably best not to argue with me (my face always shows my emotion ;-)) & said I could take him today & she'd check with the head teacher as she thought the law had changed.

I wouldn't mind so much if a) they had written to us in December to say that this was now the case & b) they were so bloomin' stubborn about DD not starting until she was 5 (she missed the full time cutoff date by two days this time last year) leaving a small girl wondering why she had to go home at lunchtime when all the other kids got to stay.

Sorry rant over, I'm off to pick my ds up & then we're off to play in a swimming pool with his friends ('cos surely that's as important for a 4 year old as sitting staring at BEN10 on a laptop on a friday afternoon - now don't get me started on that :-o)

A child becomes of compulsory school age when he or she reaches the age of five and must start school in the term following his or her fifth birthday (unless a child is educated otherwise). taken from http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/management/atoz/c/compulsoryschoolage/

The school might get a bit funny and threaten to withdraw his place in reception but legally they can't stop you taking him out, nor can they report you to Education Welfare for not sending him to school full time.

We were the other way around I took mine to the first half day and when I wanted to collect him he had a fit. Second day me and the dinner ladies were chasing him to catch him to take him home. Day 3 we had a word with the teacher and he went all day from the third day. He was 5 the following March (sept start).

My dd didn't want to come home, she was in tears.  DS didn't want to come home but as he was seeing his best pal it makes up for it.

Have since found out that I was correct in thinking that he doesn't have to be full time until after Easter.  Apparently the change in county rules is that the school MUST offer full time after terms 1 & 2 (old school Autumn Term for the rest of us crones).

He will be continuing his swimming lessons with his friends - am glad as his teacher only does "preschool" lessons but she gets results out of these boys & they'll be going straight into the second class after Easter which is where my dd is now.

ds - dear son

dd - dear daughter

adding a number after the son or daughter indicates whether its son number 1, 2 etc

dh - dear hubby

dp - dear partner

dw - dear wife

Those are used mainly on American boards, aren't they? The British-based boards seem to prefer OH (Other Half, so equally applicable to all variations of partner, whether in or out of wedlock!) or just Son or Daughter.

I usually post on parenting forums (UK based ones) so I'm used to DS1, DD2, DP, DH etc - I'm not sure if it's an American 'thing' or not but it's certainly a parenting forum 'thing'.

Yes it's parenting forums that I picked it up from (but I like to think the D is for darling ;-)) still not sure what PMSL stands for though
