- By cositalinda [us] Date 02.01.09 11:29 UTC
i have a lab/rot puppy and am curious as to how he will behave when he is older.alot of people have told me he will be dangerous but i think it all depends on how i raise him. any advice or comments?!?! all points of view are welcome

You will need to take him to training classes and socialise him well with other dogs and people of all sorts.

The 'window of socialisation' closes at about 16 weeks; until then you need to ensure he's met (and is comfortable and not frightened by) as many experiences as possible. Old people, children, trucks, cars, trains, cows, horses, crowds, cats, bicycles, people in hats, people with sticks, people in wheelchairs, baby buggies ... anything you can think of!

If you teach him that Life is to be trusted then he'll be a safe dog. Dog's behaviour generally reflects the quality of their upbringing - some dogs are more difficult than others (they all have individual personalities, just as people do) but if their owner works harder with them then there is unlikely to be a problem.

Socilaize him alot with people, animals ect- any dog can be dangerous with out the proper socalization needed to become a well adjusted pet. Teach him manners so obedience is a must with any dog :-)

I had a wolf/rott not a mean bone in his body- he died at 12yrs old if I remember correctly. My daughter use to hold onto his tail to walk and he played with our ferrets- best pet we ever had. I am not recomending this type to anyone, just because we had a great animal does not mean the next one with this cross in it will be.

Good idea; when he's about 9 months to a year old would be the best time.

I'm not sure why anyone would think he'd be dangerous?!

I own Rotts and they are far from dangerous unless you react badly to slobber and kisses lol!  Get him along to puppy socialisation classes asap and just get him out socialising with lots of new sights and sounds. Get lots of people from young to old to meet your puppy and always, always make sure he has positive experiences with both people and other dogs.

I personally don't castrate any of my dogs and definitely wouldn't consider it before 18mths but everyone has differing opinions on this subject.

I personally would not alter until he is fully mature-

I forgot you are in Florida.  Over here in the UK we have lots of dog training classes which normally include puppy socialisation classes where they learn all the basic commands but get to mix with other puppies and new sights and sounds.

If you call your vet they will most likely be able to give you information about puppy training classes.   You can also try the nearest ASPCA and they may be able to help with information.

If you have a local Pet Smart they do puppy classes.
