Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / toilet training new bichon puppy
- By millie_8_7 [gb] Date 02.01.09 11:13 UTC
I recently bought a bichon bitch and she is just over 8 weeks old. She came to us already paper trained which i thought was amazing (as all our other dogs as puppies used to go everywhere!!!) however, she will not do her business outside. When we put her outside she thinks its a game and just runs around. I also have a 5 year old Italian Spinone. When put outside together, the Spinone goes to the toilet but the puppy still plays and is not copying the big dog. The only time she will go is when i pick her up and put her outside when she starts circling the paper. She will not ask to go out or show any other signs that she wants the loo. Do i just keep picking her up when she is about to go???
Help

If she's been trained that she should use paper indoors, you need to untrain that and train that she should use the surface (grass is usually best) outside. This will probably be easiest to do by removing any paper indoors and putting a piece outside for her (so that she gets used to performing out of doors) before eventually removing the paper entirely.

8 weeks is early, early days :-)  I would not use paper during the day now but put her out after every meal, every nap and every 30-45 minutes when awake and playing or, of course, anytime you spot her circling and looking like it.  Put your coat on and be prepared to stay out there until you get a result.  When she goes use a command word as she does it and treat or praise.  As time goes on you can start using the command word as a prompt but don't try to rush it.

have you tried putting her out when you know shes going to do her buisness staying out with her until shes done it and as soon as she does give her a small treat she will assosiate the treat with the action of toilet outside and if she does it indoors you need to catch her in mid stoop and make a noise that will starkle her then put her out she will assosiate the loud noise with the action of doing the toilet indoors and try not to do it thats how i trained my two lhasa apsos

Like others have said, 8 weeks is very early to expect signals.  We were outside every 30 minutes at that age and for some time after.  When you look back you will realise that this stage passes quickly but at the time it will feel like a lengthy process!!

Keep your hat and coat by the door to collect on the way out but to prevent accidents I'd recommend getting the pup out promptly after eating, sleeping and playing then also every 20 or 30 minutes for the first few weeks.  You can't rely on the puppy to 'tell you' for sometime yet but you'll find that you get pretty good at spotting the signs :)

Whenever possible take your pup out on her own; I found that in the early days my pup would be distracted by my older dog and he was much more likely to perform if I quietly waited.  Once she has toiletted, and been rewarded, it's a good opportunity for a bit of play time or training.  I never leave my dogs outside on their own if I need to be sure they've 'been' as they'll just hoon about instead!!
